Hi this is Fartinflumps other half here, we have just returned from a lovely trip to Wales, (site not on UK camp site - will be shortly when I have learnt how to add it), after erecting our brand new Monty 6 we discovered that one of the upright poles had split on the corner where it connects on to the roof pole, it may be worth checking yours to see if a seam runs on the outside edge, all the other poles do not have this seam and havent split. Has anyone else had this problem? We had a test run in our garden and there wasnt a split but somehow it has appeared.
Just noticed it's your first post, welcome to the site.
You'll soon have loads of fellow Monty owners replying to your post. At least you didn't mention that your tent had leaked, as that is the one of the problems that has been posted.
Both my sister's and our's have a split roof pole at one side we have both sent e-mail to outwell last month we bought them from world of camping last year and have both used them for 10 days last year and 10 days this year also orange rust mark have started to appear we shall wait and see what outwell have to say!!!
Rosie - thanks for pointing this out - I'll make sure to check the poles when we're next away - which will be in a week and a half.
If they have pressed in the shaped end so that it aligns with a seam in the pole, it will be more likely to split. It will be a random thing depending on how the pole end is put into the press.
I would class it as a manufacturing defect and the pole should be replaced by your supplier.
Have been to our camping supplier where we purchased the tent from originally and they have swopped the split pole no problems, other than this problem we had a great time in the Monty 6 and it stood up well to a night of wind and rain.
Rosie - well done - glad to hear all OK with the replacement pole. Also glad to hear the tent performed well - it is a little worrying when we read all the leaking reports.
MKMH - I think Outwell went through a bad patch in quality of manufacturing and a few tents have caused problems. If I were you, when you buy a Monty 6, I'd make it quite clear to the seller that you will be bringing the thing back for a replacement if there is any leakage, shoddy workmanship or poles split after only a few usages. Get them to agree to those conditions before buying. You'll get an impression from them at the time of their attitude. Walk away if not happy.
I have noticed that most fibreglass tent poles split eventually after many erections and dismantlings of the tent. The solution is to buy alloy tent pole replacements. Which you can get from many camping shops. They are expensive but wont split and are much lighter too than fibreglass poles.
The same thing happened to my Outwell Nebraska XL. The original poles and the replacement poles split. I have now been sent a brand new tent but havn't had chance to try it yet ( the original one leaked as well ).
We were worried about leaks after reading about problems on here. During our first heavy rainfall we padded nervously around the tent, checking for water but there was not a drop! We did however, get some water on the bathtub groundsheet in the rainsaver porch but this may have been to do with pitching as it was running down a pole into the porch. We weren't using the porch anyway so we just took the groundsheet out. All in all, we're absolutely delighted with the tent. Would thoroughly recommend it. No leaks, no condensation, nice and cosy, plenty of space.
