Hi Driffta,
We had exactly the same problem with our Monty 6. We had 2 trial attempts in the garden to get used to it but found the porch pole to be an incredibly tight fit, putting a worringly amount of strain on the tent material (like yourself). There are LOTS of threads on this website about the same issue if you do a quck search. Some owners say it gets looser with use, some had no problems, others cut a small length off the pole itself. Ours snapped the first time we tried to use it for real in France the other week! We were able to buy a suitable replacement fibre glass pole and cut it to length a better length. Worked perfectly thereafter! If you're worried about cutting the actual Outwell pole, consider buying a replacement flexipole from your nearest camping shop and try using this to see if it does in fact get looser with use?
Good luck,
Patrick
