On a recent trip my friend acquired a folding table and stool set - needed 3 bolts to make it serviceable once more - and I acquired a rectangular washing up bowl (easier to pack than my round one) and a mug to replace the one I'd lost from my picnic set.

Packing up at a festival I was horrified by the number of tents that had been left, I'm sure they can't all have been that damaged and perhaps a good one could have been fashioned from all the bits on a few. But my daughter wouldn't let me try.

Mothers can be sooooo embarassing, can't we?

I'm sure some charity could have used those for emergency relief after an earthquake or something - it seems a shocking waste

We aquired a gas bottle.  At the time we were using 4.5kg bottle (we'd been given) and then one trip out Richard spotted one in the bin area - so we rehoused it.   Meant we had a spare.

Excellent stories - and a great camping tradition too. This is the very principle on which the Freecycle organisation is based! We don't just scavenge on campsites, no skip is safe from us!

My OH's parents are an inspiration too - their allotment is a tribute to this principle - the water butts are old "mincemeat" vats from a cake factory, the terracing is built with old telegraph poles split lengthways and the greenhouse is built from old packing crates and glass from a greenhouse that was being knocked down on the neighbouring plot. And they have home comforts in their shed like seating, lighting and cooking thanks to our recycling of camping kit.

And of course all this recycling and re-use is good for the planet in terms of saving precious resources, so we can all feel virtuous about it too!

Don`t get me started on what I fish out of skips to use on the allotment...I`ll be here all day!

I will just mention though that my Hubby laughed like a drain when he spotted me measuring up our old 70`s windows the other day. Why? Because they`re being replaced in two months, and I was wondering if they were big enough to make a small lean-to greenhouse on my allotment. Which they are.....

Hi  just wanted to share  and ask for opinions as we are new campers and aren't quite sure of etiquette just yet. We went camping for 5 nights I have to say very bad weather- this may be the reason the following happend. A family nearby were packing up (and as you all know making 101 "bin trips" ) However I was cooking breakie (as usual) so didn't really take to much notice. My OH and my son alerted me to fact that there could be a "recycling opportunity" here!!! I could not believe it . A brand new fold up chair  (still with tag) and again brand new pansx2  BNWT washing up bowl (Godsend we forgot ours) plus other stuff.  i kinda thought Jeremy Beadle might be watching as we took our finds away from the green wheelie monster Luckily he wasn't. Anyway off we went for our day out and when we got back  I noticed that our "benifactors" had left a little bit of  rubbish  on their pitch. Thinking that one good turn deserves another I would bin it. However by the carrier bag of rubbish was a box of 10 unopend beers. BLISS!!  What I want to know is has anybody done anything similar????

Don't knock it.

Anything that allows you to keep extra coin in your poke can't be bad.

Val - I think you must be related to OH' s parents!!

Perhaps I should also boast on their behalf that they won Sheffield Allotment champoinship this year - though whether their "wombling" tendencies ( that is what the family tend to call the activities of re-use and recycling) had any influence on the judges, I don't know.

Good luck with the greenhouse design.
