'scuse my ignorance, but what do people do about tent security?? do you leave your stuff in the tent if you go off for the day, and if so how do you keep the tent secure?

Hi Lynn. Take small valuables like money, camera, watches etc. with you, or if you're walking you could leave them locked in the glove box of your car. If you take a TV or DVD player with you, put them out of sight in the bedroom.

Most campers seem to look out for each other, so make sure you say 'Hi' to your neighbours, that way they'll know your faces, so will know if a stranger is hanging around your tent while you're out.

We all leave things like cooker, fridge, chairs, tables, kitchen stand etc. in our tents, but very people on this forum have ever had anything stolen while on holiday - some members have had camping equipment stolen from their shed at home though

Hi lynn I am in the process of making a box that lifts off my trailer frame 5ft x3ft x2ft that I can use as a storage box and table ,everyone whose seen it says it looks like a coffin.when we go out for the day the cooker and gas and stuff worth stealing will be stored in it ,but expensive gear comes with us cameras, watches and of course money. As jk98 says most campers watch each others backs. In one incident our camping neighbour had gone out . some one turned up and started rooting through their tent I challenged them as to who they were .It turned out to be the in laws of the owners, had come for a surprise visit ,but as they say better to be safe than sorry

cheers, we only have a car so no room for a mini coffin (besides it would give the kids nightmares), will follow advice about taking small valuable items with us, and risk leaving all the other stuff there.
Will deffo make friends with the neighbours, it will be our first time camping when we go next year, and we haven't got a clue about anything !

Hi Lynnlambert, as mentioned jk98 we look or take all our valuables in the car to. If going walking look in glovebox or in boot. All our other kit we leave on site. As also mentioned , most campers keep a look out for each other and we haven't had anything stolen.

I don't think there is such a thing as security with tents.

If someone really wanted to steal they probably could. The stuff I leave in a tent could easily be replaced for a few quid at the supermarket.

However with CCTVs, freindly neighbours, and stuff out of sight, all should be OK.

Fortunately I've been OK so far.

I would imagine a caravan would be a much tastier target.

In 23 years of camping we have never had a single incident of theft (or indeed been on a site where anything has happened). On the whole, campers are a supportive community and look out for each other. All the advice above is sensible, but once you have done these things just go and relax.

.....actually I have just realised that we do have ONE mate who was robbed on a site; a badger nicked his bacon!!

I went camping with a friend in Belgium & had our food stolen by (we think) a fox.

No matter though just went shopping for more the following day (in those days Belgium was alot cheaper than rip off Britain) and were more careful about where we stored it (locked in the car)

This was something I was worried about when we first started camping, but as long as you take sensible precautions there should be no problems.

We never leave any valuables in the tent or anything, we even take it in turns going for showers as it`s a pain taking mobiles, cameras etc with you and keeping them dry.

When we go out for the day we never leave anything visible inside the tent. We also make sure we unpack all bags as we feel it`s easier and more tempting, for someone to swipe a bag full of stuff rather than an armfull of unpacked stuff.

As everyone else says though, theft is very rare and campers do look out for each other. Say `Hi` to your neighbours, let yourself be known and most people will lok out for you.

Hi Lynn.

Check out your household insurance, some polices cover camping equip and some don't so it,s well worth having a look, Our insurance is with Tesco and they don't cover so we will be looking  around for some before we go away next summer. Lets face it the kit costs quite a lot when you add it all up and i would not be able to replace it all in one go. last year we where on campsites with just our tent late in the season so it would be easy for someone to take it all whist we where out for the day. I have not heard anyone ever having stuff stolen but better save then sorry.
