Hi,
You mention three brands. Gelert, Wynnster and Sunncamp.
Sunncamp is a premium brand using higher quality of materials and build. The Sunncamp has 'X Flex' shaterproof poles with a five year guarantee, it uses higher quality fabrics with more theads per inch, Pegging and guying points are either bar tacked or flagged stiched on with thick 'oxford' fabric reinforcing. You are not comparing like for like, if you want quality go for sunncamp or outwell. Incidentally the Family Vario is now a fully sewn in groundsheet to the fly.

I have to disagree QUONG, all  of the above mentioned brands are well known, good quality manufacturers who consistently produce good tents.  If you search for any of the three mentioned previously you will find many satisfied customers, myself included, I couldn't want for better tents than any of my 3 wynnsters.

Courvoisier defo, every time!  With a splash of ginger ale, which unfortunately I don't have at the moment, not even a drop of lemonade in the house and can't drink it neat, need some bubbles!

WELCOME to UKCS.....

After much deliberation I wanted a tunel tent looked at them all had I been able to afford ANY would have had the Royal avignion as I have a royal day room and it is sound doesnt move and loads of space ..But I didnt have the extra money and so went for the Gelert.
I bought last years model brand new ( only change for 2007 is the slight change of colour lighter blue) and it cost me £139.00 they have gone up to £159.95 now but thats better than the original £249.00 and it has exactly the same HH and extras as all the other formentioned tents....
HERE

www.leisureshack.co.uk tell them your a member of UKCS and ask for discount as they are considering giving our members a % off if enough ask...
Good luck with what ever you choose

Unfortunately the Lokon 5 is significantly more expensive than the 6 on that site :(

It seems to me that the differences between the tents that I have listed are that the Gelert Lokon and the Royal Aviginon have steel side poles, whereas the Skandika Canyon and Sunncamp Vario do not. There are also some size differences.

What are the benefits of the side poles, and do they suggest a failing elsewhere in the design, are there downsides to them?

Are there any other significant differences?

If you look the lokon 6 is £159 the other lokon 5 and the lockon 6 are 2007 models ( well 2007 colours) thats the only difference there doesnt seem to be a 2006 lokon 5 anymore maybe sold out..

The side pole are to help keep the tent rigid as some tunnels tent to have a good old bend about in the wind...

All three makes do higher end, higher specification tents and lower-end cheaper tents. You really need to compare tents with tents.

As alreayd said, I think you can trust any of these makes - look more at the tents, when you compare.

I'm not saying they are bad tents or that they do not work, they certainly are well known and have many satisfied customers that is not in question But there is a difference in the qualities of materials used to reach a certain price point. This is undisputable and if you wish i can give you the technical specs of some of the material differences.

Just to let you all know, we have purchased a Gelert Lokon Vario 5. In addition to the helpful advice on here we spoke with a couple of dealers; there seems to be a consensus that the Sunncamp is better quality than Gelert/Royal, but is difficult to get specifics. In the end, bearing in mind our minimal usage and the significant price premium, for a smaller tent, we went with the Gelert.

We bought online from Tentman; although it hasn't arrived yet, I am impressed with their approach so far. Without giving too much away, they had made an error on their webpage, but volunteered to stand by it. I'm sure that many retailers would have looked to get out of the situation.

Off now to look at reviews of campsites in the new forest

I wish! I think that the bottom of the market was in Oct/Nov. Still, we did go for a 2006 model, at not much more than you paid, but it was sold-out so they are supplying the 2007 model at the same price Which is really good of them!
