Due to go out for our first camping expedition for 2 weeks in August, me hubby & 4 kids. Got EHU and plan to take a table top fridge. I've heard that if you use home appliances the electric could trip if you overload the system. Does this mean that I would have to unplug the fridge every time I wanted to use a kettle, mobile phone charger, etc.......
Sunnyhoneyd. Have a look at the top of the Equipment forum. There is a whole section devoted to EHUs in tents which should answer any queries you may have. However, basically you need to know what the rating of the supply is on your site. Some equipment - mainly those that supply heat such as kettles and the like - are power hungry. Others - such as phone chargers, lights etc - are not. In simple terms, work on 1,000 watts (1Kw) 4 amps. My simple rule is not to use two power-hungry appliances together and leave the rest plugged in. You can do the calculations quite simply if you check the rating on your appliance. And think about getting hold of lower-rated appliances if you can find them. Good luck on your two-week trip - but why wait until August.
Watts/230 = Amps it will draw.
Eg:- 1500 Watts (1.5Kw)/230 = 6.52 Amps.
Look on the back/bottom/rear wherever for your appliances ratings. It depends on the rating of the hook-up on the site your staying on. Some are as low as 6 Amps, some can be up to 16Amps.
So if you have 12Amps then 12 x 230 = 2760 Watts.
Don't be tempted to take your electric kettle from home as these are usually upwards of 2000 watts (Ours is 3000w) Instead just get a cheap travel kettle, they are about 600w. We usually have an electric cool box, travel kettle, light and a fan heater. If the site rating is very low then we will turn off the fan heater before using the kettle.
Hope all this helps...

Thanks for the easy calculations this will really help me out. Will take advice and get travel kettle I think. I've emailed the site to ask for their amp rating as well.

We leave our fridge plugged in all the time, but wouldnt use our kettle and toaster together. Also we have an old kettle that I have used at home in the past with no problems at all, stayed at loads of sites and had EHU and never had a problem with the electric kettle.
as previous, we leave the fridge on all the time but have tipped the elecs if we use the kettle and fan heater at the same time, use one at once ( easy to say but i sometimes forget) easy to forget but not the end of the world just reset the rcd
Thanks for all your help. Feeling much happier about the whole thing now. Will definitely leave fridge on and TRY to remember not to have too many things going at the same time!
I do agree with advice given , but i would definitely have at least one weekend away , before going away for two weeks. As there is always some unforseen things to iron out and tweek , and you need to know evrything is going to fit in place and pitch correctly.
