I've had my first attempt at putting the Aspen 700 DLX up today and tried to remember all of the advice I had read on here. The tent was up with a bit of a struggle, so I thought I would have another look at the video to see how they recommend its put up.

It looks like there is now a new video with a different method of erecting the Aspen. To summarise - they say to treat it as a "tunnel tent with additional front to back poles."


*They put the green & yellow poles in first and ring and pin first one side then the other.

*They then lay all three poles flat ontop of each other and peg the back of the tent down.

*The tent is then lifted and pulled forward with the front then being pegged down.

*Once the inner is up and pegged, the red front to back poles and the fibreglass pole is inserted

I am sure the old video recommends inserting all poles with the tent on the floor, then try and lift and ring & pin, which as most people have pointed out it awkward and heavy.


Has anyone tried this method as the video makes it look a lot simpler???? Have a look for yourself -

I have just downloaded the instructions and yes, they are completely different to the supplied instructions (and the ones on the website just last week). Here is the inner tent instructions:-

Inner Pitching First

The best way to pitch this tent is to consider it a Tunnel design with additional front to back poles
•     Assemble poles on ground:- Steel Poles -    5 shaped roof poles, 10 upright poles & corner pieces, 2 light canopy poles ;F/glass poles – 1 straight roof pole - blue, 1 long porch pole - black.
•     The poles are colour coded to match corresponding pole sleeve entry points and to connect roof poles to uprights.
•     Open out inner and position with front centre door to required direction
•     Insert 3 side to side steel shaped roof poles through pole sleeves.

•     Starting at one side, insert upright poles through the upper pole sleeves and join to corner piece and roof pole
NB. – the pole ends are shaped to fit 1 way only

•     Locate the ends of the poles onto the Pin & Ring system one at a time on one side locate the pin by following the seam down the wall of the inner; then locate the opposite ends on the other side.
•     Lay flat with the door on top and all the poles lying neatly on top of each other.
•     Using the steel v-channel pegs, peg out the rear corners of the tent
•     2 people can now lift the tent upright and the pull it forward
•     Using the steel v-channel pegs, peg out the front corners and the door of the tent
•     The inner tent should now be free-standing.
•     Insert 2 front to back shaped steel roof poles through pole sleeves and also the blue fibreglass pole
•     Starting at one side, insert upright poles through the upper pole sleeves and join to corner piece and roof pole
•      Carefully reposition the poles to ensure that the fitted groundsheet is flat and wrinkle fr

I saw the new vango aspen video the other dat too and have to agree the new way looks the best. We really struggled to get the tent off the ground with all the poles inserted and will definetly be trying the "new" way. What did you think of the tent, great isnt it?

Thanks Andylong for the info, the video is 100% better we have the 700dlx and although we managed to pitch it, it was a struggle this looks a lot easier this way, can't wait to try it.

Yes, the tent is fantastic and would definately recommend it from my first impressions. Hopefully this new method will iron out the only problem which is the awkardness of getting the thing up.

Hopefully someone will get chance to try this method shortly and post a response.

Yes I did notice the wind which also gave me a bit more encouaragement! Knowing my luck it will be raining when I pitch it in anger for the first time!

Has anyone had experience of pitching an inner first tent in the rain?

hi all

will try this method at Easter looks a lot easier ,we have also pitched the inner in the rain does not take long to dry out ,best tent that we have had plenty of room ,nice and warm plenty of doors when hot and very light inside . happy camping to all those who are going at Easter

Looks easier that wa, we now need a camping trip to try it.I still say that this is one of the best tents on the market, even with the new 2007 models, is the wardrobe rail an added part for 2007,only used the tent once and i remember that there was an extra pole or is it a spare

we have the wardrobe rail in our  2006 aspen. We too had a spare rail not sure what it was for.

I have only put the inner up so far, but ended up with a spare short bent pole (like the ones at the top of the leg). Is this a spare or is it used somewhere on the fly sheet or porch?

yes the wardrobe pole goes in the bedroom that splits. Its great, really useful. We will this room as storage/ changing/ wardrobe
