How do owners of this tent cope without the SIG in the non sleeping compartment?

Please advise.

Thanks
Andrew

First off, IMO, this tent does not suffer from not having a SIG (I have a Montana as well and appreciate the SIG in that), as a short stay tent it works just fine and has the advantage of a seporate inner, making it double skinned.

I have a tarp which is, from memory, 5x5m. The area of the whole tent is 4x4m, so the tarp fits and goes up the sides 0.5m on each side. The tent has little hooks on the inside, which keep the walls of the tarp upright - in efect, it becomes a bathtub or "riser" groundsheet.

I then sit the pole and the inner on top of it (the tarp covering the whole inner area). This means that you can not peg the pole down, but I have never needed to do this anyway. The tension of the tent, when taught, is sufficient to keep the pole in place.

Hope it helps. Fire away with any other questions.

It really is a fine tent.

This shows the inside (without the canopy on). I have folded down the tarp at the front.

note: The inside compartment is also cotton, with a rubber/synthethic base - no cheap nylon here!

And "yes" folks, there is just that one pole in the middle! (and a couple at the door frame to keep the entrance shape).

If you are interested in this tent, then be aware that using a inner tent, unlike the SIG versions, has one downside, in that the sleeping inner is 2m x 4m (becuase of the central pole) - which means that if you are taller than 2m, you would have to lay side on, reducing the effectiveness of the sleeping area.

If I can just add, with the enthusiasm of a late convert to canvas, that Cabanon mudflaps/draft strips are a hundred times better than any I have ever come across on a nylon tent. They are much larger and heavier, much more substantial, and they are slightly longer than the gap between the bottom of the canvas proper and the ground, so that they rest on the ground when the tent is up creating  an 'L' shape', rather than just sitting on top of the ground and/or blowing about in the wind. If you then drop a groundsheet into place on top of the lower edge of the draft strips, that is more than sufficient to hold them in place and create a draft-free interior if needed! MT

Absolutely. I forgot to add that the with the flaps (they are bigger and more substantial than any other I have had on any tent) tucked under the the groundsheet, it really is very snug and draught free.

Aren't canvas tents great!  There is just something about them, don't you think?

I am a 60 year young woman who loves camping, I currently have a couple of Khyam tents but the drawback is that I have no romm at all to dry them off if it is wet wehn packing up, or still dewy.
I am thinking of a Cabanon Noumea, the two berth model. Will I have the physical strength do you think to erect it on my own. I really do need standing height, am 5ft.2ins.
Any other suggestions will be very welcome.

Try camping abroad, loads of sun and lots of lovely wine.

The tent will either always be dry, or you will be too sloshed to care!

I think you would ahve no problem pitching the Noumea, which would be even easier that your QE Kyham. Putting the pole up is done without the tent under tension, so it is not hard and you do not have to be tall. Again, there is nothing to "pull-over" anything, so height is jsut not an issue.

However, I would think about the drying out - this will be a canvas tent and will need drying out, and am not sure would fit in your average lounge.

re: the drying off, do you have a hallway where you can hang a smallish tent down the side of the balcony?

You might want to look at something like the Outwell Arizona L, which is very similar to my Robens Valley Lodge. It is simple to pitch solo, a small size, light, but has standing height (my Roben's version is even lighter).

I suggest this, as it is also a tent you could erect indoors to dry out, in the average lounge or light enough to hang over a balcony to dry.

We don't use a groundsheet (at all!) in the front of our Cabanon Antigua and it is fine. The flaps are great and keep the drafts out
