Hi all,  am quite new to camping, we've been a couple of times, but this Christmas we bought quite a lot of new equipment (gas cooker, table and chairs, lamps)  and a bigger tent.

When we first went camping we were a bit apprehensive about leaving the tent zipped up with all our stuff in, but we didn't venture too far, and didn't have too much stuff to steal. So weren't too fussed.

Is it me being a bit mad! What does everyone else do? I was thinking of locking the cooker away in the car if we go out for the day?

Any advice/ reassurance would be grateful!

Thanks

Hi ya nutter welcome to uKCS the cestist and funniest and most helpful site on the www...

Most of us campers are pretty sound people you will find that people arund you when your camping will look oout for your tent ect when your not there so make and effort to get to know them...

I never leave any valuables in the tent ...eg Tv games stations ect ect money watches they go and stay locked in the car.

Tenting is very safe im sure you will have no problems i mean who would want ot nick a cooker??

go camping enjoy   if in doubt get on a UKCS meet and join the other nutters on here safe and fun...

Where are you located?

Ditto from me. We don't take items like tv's, games machines etc as we never have hook up so they're not a problem. We just tend to have general stuff left in tent, clothes, cooker, chairs etc. Been tenting for the last 15 years and never had a problem with stuff being nicked. Just be sensible and keep all your valuables ie wallet, phone cash etc lockes away.

Don't worry most campers are honest and 'safe' so go enjoy yourself !!!

same here, never had a problem, campers are generally nice people, have even put stuff inside for us in the past when a sudden rain cloud has passed over. People know who is pitched near them and will keep an eye out.

Great thank you all, you have put my mind to rest.

We are in Romford, Essex, only camped in Essex so far, we are hoping to venture further this summer, never been to Cornwall so am hoping to get there this year.

Book up soon Tenternutter, many of the popular sites in Cornwall will already be booked for the summer.

Hi tenternutter and welcome to UKCS a most addictive site. In all the times we have been camping never had anything stolen, most campers are very helpful and would keep an eye on things. If you do have anything of value with you just take it with you when you go out for the day.

I used to think the same - I even bought a pad lock for the zip!

Most campers usually are packed to the hilt with their own stuff - without having anyone elses stuff!

I've even left the car unlocked and windows open while on campsites (ok so the dog is in the car at the time)

I totally agree with this site - it is addictive and very informative!

Hi Tenternutter, I can only agree with the others on this matter. Most campers look out for each other, and strangers tend to get noticed and watched. I find it is a good idea to introduce yourselves to the neighbours, this way they know who is in the tent, and hopefully who shouldn't be. Please do not let this matter spoil your camping, over the years I have never had any problem. Of course this is no guarantee, but I don't remember anyone saying they have lost anythiong.

More problems with dogs relieving themselves on your tent and stray footballs than tealeafs!

That apart valuables should always be kept in a safe place regardless of how much we may all trust each other.

As others have said its more likely to be the outsider on the site who is the problem than your fellow campers and for that we all need to keep an eye open.

Relax and enjoy
