just got my first tent with a sig in , after taking advice from this forum i started to think about sig protection ( ie. groundsheet under to protect and putting things under chair/table legs to stop puncturing the sig )
Then after a visit to local camping shop we came across softex caravan awning breathable grounsheets and thought , why not just deck our living area out in that ( sunncamp vario 6 with a living area of approx 3.7x2.5 m )
Has anyone else done this ? does the groudsheet slip or "ruck " up has anyone got a better solution or am i just nuts for wanting to "carpet " my living space ? any views welcome
We use the cheapy plastic non-slip backed picnic rugs. We put these in the SIG living area and they don't tend to slide around....car rugs do !
Also, we're planning to purchase a few more to line our sleeping pods with, should keep the cold out and feel nice to the touch. Especially as kids have a habit off falling off their airbeds and just laying on the pod floor ! (Still asleep of course).
Hi
The material used for SIGs is tough, even pitching on stoney ground my old tent never punctured. If you are unlucky enough to get a hole, gaffer or duck tape is great stuff. As for the softex, its almost sticky and I find it attracts dirt and feels cold and wet to touch (though its doesn't absorb water). You joke about carpet, but I use a length of stair carpet as a long door mat, its warm and collects most of the dirt of shoes and dog paws etc.
We tried this and had a piece of Softex to cover the whole of our inner. It was very nice underfoot and we didnt find it got mucky as we also use a doormat. Our problem was the size of it. A big piece of Softex is very bulky and we just didnt have the room for it in the car. I ended up car booting it. We now use those folding picnic rugs. Nice and cosy and fold away small.
Hi,have you checked out the new outwell tent carpets? I am planning on getting one that best fits my wynnster orion 7.Check it on froogle to get the best price.
I agree with what has already been said; Softex won't slip and will give good protection, but is bulky when folded and can feel a bit 'clammy'. We too use picnic rugs - you can shake them easily to keep the tent free from dust and grass which gets brought in on feet, and then bung them in the washer when you get home.
thanks for all your replies , we have got plenty of picnic rugs and to be honest i dont know why - upgradeing/sidegrading to a sig ( depending on your view) would make me think we needed carpet !
most helpful comment tho is the folded volume of the softex - a point i never thought of - us ,like most of us , are always slaves to space , so this being pointed out , is most helpful , i guess im just wanting "new equipment" - it gets hard when you have everything , isnt part of camping just buying or thinking of buying new stuff ?
Are the softex groundsheets the holey ones? I used one of those type on top of a normal groundsheet for cosiness, seemed like a good idea the time, but if you spill anything on it, it goes through the holes and sloshes about between the two groundsheets, you can't mop it up easily. After a few days camping the red wine starts to onk a bit.
I keep seeing people referring to these "non slip backed picnic rugs". Can someone give me a link to some? I can't quite find them, or be sure I'm looking at the right thing.
