Hi We are hoping to do some touring this summer in Ireland, our present tent takes a while to erect and take down each time. So thinking of the Khyam Xl Classic and also the annex you can add on. Is this quite a good tent for stop overs for 1-2days here and there, and use the annex for those longer the stays. Is it quite quick to put up, how do they stand up to heavy rains and winds, how long does it take to put the annex up. Love to hear from any folk who have this tent or annex. Thanks

We have had this tent for two years now and it's brilliant. You can get the main body of the tent standing up in approx 10 minutes (and that's with my OH doing it more or less on his own - I'm not much help!). It then takes us a further 35-45 mins (in good conditions) to guy it out and peg down the groundsheet etc. Over the two years it has withstood torrential downpours and howling gales with no problem at all. Plenty of room inside for the two of us and so easy to erect/take down that I wouldn't look at anything else now. I can't comment on the annex as we don't have one, but I know several people on here do - so I'm sure someone will be along soon to help with that.

Hi, Malc...
I used to have the 'XXL Classic' (until three years ago) and now have the smaller 'XL Classic' with the annexe... Both are extremely good tents and will stand up to anything the weather can throw at you (40 m.p.h. winds and torrential rain, last August!)...
The 'Ridgidome' tents really are simple to pitch (once you've had a couple of 'practice runs') but don't be fooled by the outlandish claims you'll hear about how quick they can be pitched!... It's one of my 'bug bears' when you hear someone make daft claims about how quick they can pitch a tent, most of the times given are pure fantasy!... If you can pitch the 'XL Classic' (with annexe) in an hour singlehanded, you really are doing well. And they are, without doubt, the easiest (large) tent I've ever pitched singlehanded...
So, I'd say go ahead and buy the 'XL Classic' and annexe, because they really are brilliant weatherproof tents... But, don't be fooled by the pitching times!... Andy...
P.S. When I use the 'annexe' with the main tent, I pitch it at the same time as the main tent. This may seem a bit confusing, but if and when you get your 'XL Classic' and annexe, I'll go into more detail if you'd like. Believe me it's easier than pitching the main tent and then attaching the annexe afterwards...

Hi,
I am looking into buying one of these too, having seen a demo at the Caravan, Boat and Outdoor show last week. Why does it take so long to peg it down? We have a Diablo 600 at the moment which we can pitch in 45 minutes. I was hoping that the Kyham would be much quicker than this? Can anyone enlighten me?
Cheers,
Sarah

Hi, Sarah...
The answer is, you probably could pitch the 'XL Classic' faster, but not as quick 'as advertised'...
After folding out the main poles (legs), which takes only a minute or two. You then need to peg out the main 'tri-guys' then attach the bedroom poles and peg out the base. Then you have several more 'secondary' guylines attached to the main tent and bedroom pod, to peg out. After that you go inside, peg the 'draught flaps' down, put the groundsheet in place and peg that down too. Last of all, you 'hang' and attach the inner tent...
It's all very easy, but takes time (and I can't be bothered to rush, whilst camping!) just like any other tent. The really big advantage with the 'Ridgidomes' is that, no matter what size of tent you choose, they are all so easy to pitch singlehanded, in all weathers!... Andy...

I can get our XXL classic up and guyed in about 45 - 60 minutes depending on type of ground and weather conditions, thats by myself. However I dont rush, and am normally drinking a fresh cup of coffee, and dont put all the guys out. I find that with any good stable tent you do not need to put all the guys in.
However I have not pitched yet with the annexe, so that will be fun when I try that for the first time

Hi
Thanks for your replies. We never used to be in much of a hurry, but these days we usually have a fraught toddler on our hands so being able to pitch more quickly would be great. Having said that being able to put it up single handed is a real bonus. :-)
Another question. Once the groundsheet is down, are there any gaps - i.e. any chance of unwanted visitors venturing into the tent at night and nibbling crumbs?
Thanks again,
sarah
p.s. Apologies malcolmR, I didn't mean to hijack your post!

No... Well, none to speak of... If you peg down the draught flaps inside, with groundsheet pegs (like long plastic 'drawing pins') then place the 'footprint' groundsheet on top of the flaps and then peg out the six webbing straps, you'll then be draught free and virtually insect free too. The inner tent is completely sealed (S.I.G. and full insect mesh on the 'doors') so no 'beasties' can get into your 'bedroom'!...
P.S. Leave the 'door' draught flaps outside, this will allow rain to run away from the tent not into it, where the door meets the groundsheet...

Would agree you can save a lot of time if you don't bother with all the minor guy lines, or pegging down all the internal flaps and groundsheets. For a quick weekend with a reasonable weather forecast I keep pegging to a minimum and can usually be in in about half an hour single-handed. When we're setting up for our main three week holiday I take much more time and care and can still be seen fiddling and adjusting 3 days later!!

Hi Everyone
thanks so much for you input to my post, only one last thing is does this XL classic fit back into the carry bag easy when taken down, or do you have to jump up and down on it. Another point is what if it is wet, thetent had to take it down in the rain, does it damage it in any way as it is attached to the poles.
Thanks
Malcolm

Hi, Malcolm...
On your first point, the bag is, rather 'oversized' for the tent, so no problem fitting it in at all...
As far as packing the tent away damp... The poles are anodized aero aluminium, so not affected by the rain or damp. Once you get home, it's best to take the tent out of the bag and put it somewhere where the material can be 'turned' occasionally, till it's dry... Andy...

I warn you Malcolm it is like wrestling a 4 headed Anaconda getting this sort of tent dry in the house - don't jump up and down on it however tempted you are (I was!) you'll break the poles!

If the tent is wet ensure you pack the inner(s) separately or take them out of the bag immediately you get home. Leaving wet inners inside a tent bag will quickly create mould. Commonsense really - pity I didn't think about it a few years ago when I packed our Khyam L away damp and didn't use it for a few weeks. Still, a soaking in the bath with hair bleach cleaned it up and it still serves us well. Got to be the easiest large tent to erect in a gale. (Having said that - we do prefer the Coleman for longer trips)
Enjoy

It does, or rather it will do, because it won't be in the shops for a few weeks yet apparently. I'm waiting to see one 'in the flesh' before possibly buying... I'm hoping they'll also do a polycotton annexe too. I'm not sure whether I like the retro 'coffee & cream' colour, but that's just a minor consideration...
