The footprint groundsheet is a separate groundsheet, that matches to the shape and size of your tent (ie it's 'footprint') and goes down first, under the SIG. They then help to position the tent (since you can see where best to position it on the pitch) but, probably more importantly, they stop the SIG from getting muddy (and so potentially transferring to your tent walls) and make it less likely to get damaged (punctured by stones etc. - how often do you pitch and then discover a rock under the groundsheet in the middle of your living area?!).
If you go for one, though, remember it should never protrude further out than your tent walls, or else it can channel water under the tent, which then gets trapped between the SIG and the footprint groundsheet - not good!
