personally i wouldnt worry , most campsites have entry/exit security barriers , plus wardens on site normally know whose meant to be in which tent and who isnt !

i would have thought if anything the caravans are at a higher risk , due to relatively ease of hitching up - takes 2 minutes compared to the time it takes to pack a tent away , everytime we camp we leave the site happy in the knowledge that at the very least the people on the next pitch will watch over our stuff - campings like that , look after our own !

Now having your trailer/car stolen with tent inside whilst your visiting a service area - now thats a different matter !!! wonder if your insured then - anyone know ?

Check with your household insurance, each company is different. We had to specifie our equipment on our policy and double check if it is covered if you leave it unattended on site, ours isn't.

As for your trailer it should be covered under you motor insurance, but ours only covers the trailer not the contents and not when it is unhitched so if you leave it on site make sure it is well secured. When we go for more than a weekend we take the wheels off and put them in the car! as well as having a hitch lock.

I've been a tent camper for many, many years and prefer to use basic out-of-the way sites without wardens or security of any kind.  This type of site is often deserted during the day but despite this I've never once heard of a tent or even equipment being stolen. 

As jonellis said, it does happen at festivals.
