Hello everyone!  After lots of umming and aahing we have decided that we are going to invest in a tent and accessories for some good old fashioned family weekends away.  We have 4 kids ranging from 2 to 10 years old.  We always seem to find jobs to do in the house at a weekend and do not spend enough time with the kids so we are hoping that this will be good for all of us.  I have done some research and had a look at practically every tent on the market!!!!  I would be greatful if you could advise me on a good make and model!  Any help would be gratefully received! Lorraine

we could, bubbles but in the end we are all different,my advice to you is to go an see the tents actually pitched, theres loads of places to see them,ie garden centres etc,an remember dont go too big or you might have probs erecting it(the tent),most of the big tent manufacterers produce good stuff,...kyham,outwell,vango peakland etc, depends where you are really, also you can use the search on this site, its really good,...

Hi and wecome we are a soon to be family of 6 kids aged 6, 5 and 2 and bump due in 15 weeks. we have just got a Khyam ontario 8 as it has great space and very quick and easy to put up. We got a relly good deal from outdoor world, £189 for the tent. We all so got the canopy that you can put over the door for some where to cook under.

We al so have the outwell indana 8 which has steel poles so is harder work to put up but as loads of space.

PS We all so go camping to get a wawy from house work and spend more time with the kids and it works no TV, no jobs that need doing just us and the kids it is fab

Hi Lorraine

What has caught your interest so far?

There are a couple of of main decisions to make (and you'll need to research some of these) - SIG or non SIG? Think about whether you have space to dry a big inner first SIG if you have to bring it home wet.

How will you all sleep - will all of your kids sleep intogether? Will one of you sleep with a couple of the kids each? Do you want them next to you or across the tent?

Where will you cook? It gets pricey if you try to live on takeaways.

Blutone is right there is no substitute for going to displays and poking around and thinking how your family would live in each tent. The majority of the outdoor displays go up around Easter so you might have to wait a couple of weeks.

My main advice would be to make sure you DO NOT get an EHU - don't even let your kids know they exist!! If you don't have electricity there aren't any issues about taking tv's, playstations etc. and you can have the family weekends that you want!

Hi and welcome!

We were in a similar situation to you a couple of years ago. We made the mistake of 'jumping' for a huge tent from Argos which turned out to be flimsy and not really up to very much. We then had a look around camping shops and saw lots of tents on display.

It really depends what you want. We have 3 kids and needed an area we could cook in so looked for a tent with a porch and sewn-in-groundsheets (you either love 'em or hate 'em - personally I like to have all my floor area sealed from the elements and creepy crawlies!). We also wanted the kids near us rather than on opposite sides of the tent, so went for a tent with 'pods' jutting out from the main living area. We bought a Khyam Breckenridge Deluxe and it served us well....BUT...it did take the best part of 2 hours to put up fully which then prompted us to look for a tent that erected 'all in one' (without the seperate flysheet that throws over the top).

This led us to the Outwell Montana 12. A huge tunnel tent that took half an hour to put up and another half hour to fix all the guy lines. Trouble is, we had to sacrifice a large porch for cooking in - and after one season, decided we needed the porch after all (the toddler was a nightmare near the cooking station).

Our last choice had the best of everything....the Outwell Vermont XL.

We then decided however we wanted a folding camper - and that's where we are at now

Good luck on your decision!!!!

To follow on Caddy Clan's post re cooking - it's worth thinking about buying a small kitchen tent if you've got wee one's around. Then you can shut all the hot and sharp things away out of harms reach.

The Outdoor Reveloution on this site is very cheap and gets good reviews from those that have it.

I'll second PigletandTigger's advice; better safe than sorry and especially with little ones; a bit of boisterous play is all it takes to result in an accident when cooking. Kitchen tents also provide the advantage of being able to get all the clart out of the tent, and so give the illusion you are a tidy camper!
