Plan, plan and plan, and go for it.
IMHO, planning reduces risk and uncertainties.
Perform a test pitch of the new tent ahead of the trip itself to flush out any potential issues.
If it is not possible to perform a test pitch, then allow some spare time on the first day to pitch the tent, and do not arrive at dusk etc...
Security is a concern for a loan female camper, hence I usually look for sites with 24/7 on-site staff, and request a pitch close to the facilities block whenever possible.
I love camping on my own with the dog, as I can set my own agenda and not be hindered by anyone else.
Go for it and have fun.

Hi Caroline, I'm new to all this too, as this is now an old thread I wondered how you got on with your first time camping experience?
I have converted my van into a camper (taken 2months)
And I was very apprehensive too, but I have just returned from my first solo jaunt at the east Yorkshire coast for the weekend, and thoroughly glad the first time is now behind me.
Firstly, I too felt I was being watched as a newbie, but that was probably me lol, and I did wander around trying to look like an old pro, but I needn't have worried as I found it a refreshing experience, meeting a few new people along the way.
What I found the most encouraging was the way campers really enjoy the hard work of outdoor life, it was inspirational! It made me realise how I waste my weekends at home doing nothing, I am male, in my 50s,
And now I plan to thoroughly enjoy life as a camper van camper lol.
Shame there are not many solo campers around, as it would be great to meet up with them.

There are lots of solo campers around.
There are a couple of groups, the phoenix group and the new companions specifically for solo campers, there will also be facebook groups you can join, as well as meets arranged on the meeting up part of this site.
