hi bob. well back on line again. i just had another ding dong dose of flu. wow. it sure drains ya. i lost about a stone in weight. so not too bad a thing. maybe some old pants will fit now. well nice weathere up here in gateshead. rain on and off all morning and now beautiful sunshine. trying to convince the wife that camping in winter is not too bad. . lol. gonna freeze her tidlets off. but i think we will be on the isle of wight. not bge as cold there. scotland be a bit too much for her. way too cold for her. i camped up there many years ago. near thurso. sheesh it was cold. but at least the tent was good. and heater helped. but the wind. OMG. that wind sure can blow. we had rocks in the corner of the tents in carrier bags to kepp the tent down. worked ok. seen a few other tents vanish like a kite. never to be seen aga, contents spread all over. have you ever had that happen to you. lose a tent due to winds blowing like crazy.

Hello Brian...sorry to hear about the flu but if it makes you lose weight I could do with a dose...I keep putting it on!

Although I will be camping as long as I can I think the last trip I did in sub-zero temperatures was the last. Getting too old to be macho - lol.

I have been through a few gales but fortunately never lost a tent. It can get a bit scarey in a tunnel tent with fibre poles though when it nearly lays flat but I have always got away with it. The last time was only a couple of years ago when I had a dome tent with crossover poles and that twisted dramatically in the wind...had to put extra guy lines on that one. It was that that prompted me to get a tent with metal poles which should be more stable but since buying it I haven't been in any really windy weather. I tend to watch the forecasts more now and starting to become a fine weather camper.

Best of luck on the I.O.W

hi bob. well that bad spell of weather that i was in was on the top end of scotland. .and in the sand dunes. the tent was a dome. and i think an old army tent. . be we did have everything well pegged for wind. but it still had us a little worried. we made a hole in the dunes to make the tent a lot lower. ( 3 feet lower ) and that did help a lot. when we got there in the late afternoon. there was about 20 other tents. all at land level. when they seen us digging. you could see the curiosity in the faces. all eyes on us. then when we put the tent up. some came and asked. and yes. holes appeared all over. but. not much use if ya dont use rocks. pegs are of no value in sand. but some did fill bags with sand. others down to the beach for rocks. so funny seeing that. like a chain gang. anyways. those that never rocked and pegged. they had no tents in the morning. shreds of canvas. poles. and that was it. clothes all over the adjoining fields. .but we helped by giving them coffee and some breakfast. as we had loads of food. ( mates father had a shop ) i think the year was 1967. and the wind up there is still the same. WILD. but we had a great time. all 20 of us. farmers lost a few chickens tho. they came a dn looked. but nothing. no feathers. no bones. not a thing. all in the sea. lol. but we did buy lots of fresh meat from them. eggs were the best. large and always fresh. even the hen never knew the egg had gone. but most of all. the wee drams of whiskey in the local pubs. wow. it was strong then. not now. only half as strong now. and ya got more for ya money up there. 20 minutes. and we were all sozzled. out to the tents and sleep for hours. next morning. heads felt like banging dust bin lids. but our thanks went to a farmer who allowed us to park 16 motor bikes on some spare ground. and let uf camp in his field. and . could hardly beieve it. outside toilet we could use. and a small stove with coal to boil water. all we had to do was be quiet. and repair a stone wall that was falling down. HUH. some wall that was. but i loved doing it. after a few days. they all went home. just me and two others. still working on this small bit of wall. ( SMALL MY FOOT ). it took us 4 weeks to get it all done. right round the field. but he paid us well. £30 a week. a good wage in those days. and free camp site. coal fire. some meat and eggs. and veg. and the enevitable wee drams. they were not wee. they were too big for us. a cup with whiskey that is home made is not good for young kids like we were. this i feel. was the best part of my entire life. i actualy had my muscles grow. i was breathing better. and felt a lot healthier. all the fresh food and fresh sea air . what more could be wanted. so if you want to get healthy. go to a farm on the west coast. get ya back into some real farm work. dont smoke. just a few wee drams. ( never again ) and you will be fine. bob. there may be a job going for you.

Crikey! 1967...I was travelling the world at that time earning about half what you were - lol - smoking and drinking like a trooper and never did acquire any muscles  The drink and fags were cheap though.

I packed up smoking about 4 years ago and as you know...only drink very wee drams now

Aaaaw...Simon

It has been many years since I used to go camping with a group. Mostly wild camping in those days. Unfortunately life moved on and so did the people I used to go with. None of my present friends and aquaintences would be seen dead in a tent so I have camped solo for a long time now.

simon.nothing to stop you joining us oldies. a lot of us are very young at heart. myself and bob being one of them. age means nothing. soon as you have had about 12 pints. you wont be able to tell who is old and who is young. double vision due to the beer does that for you. so join the fun. dont feel left out. no need for it. get stuck in there. my wife aint camped for years. but she is looking forward to it when she gets here. and boy is she in for a shock. cos winter camping in the snow here we come. take the shine off her cheeks. put some ice on. as she is a philipino. and used to hot weather. she is gonna suffer. why dont ya try it. great to wake up to fresh snowfalls . 6 feet deep up in the top end of scotland. and a great excuse for a few drams to warm you up. and you will need those drams.
