I haven't camped for 2 years, due to weather mostly, but fancy another go this year.
Can anyone recommend any sites where solo campers aren't overwhelmed by large families? I don't hate people, but my dog likes a quiet life away from children.
I live in the South West so something not too far away would be great.

Unless one goes to an adult only site during school holidays, one is not going to escape from critters and ankle biters, IMHO.

I do not camp during school holidays except for Easter, as it is too good a weekend not to go camping. Also, it is too early in the year for the not so hardy tenters. Therefore, it is usually fairly quiet when compared with say the late May Bank Holiday weekend as it is also half term for a lot of schools.

My favourite site is Birchwood Tourist Park near Wareham in Dorset.

My last trip there was the first week of June this year, and it was so quiet I could hear a pin drop.

Been there every year since I started to camp on my own in 2009 except for 2010 when I tried another site in the area. Excellent staff, direct access to Wareham Forest, and Sandbanks beaches just a short drive away.

Other sites I have stayed in the South West included Forest Glade and Cofton Country Holidays in Devon, and Moreton C&CC in Dorset.

All were fine, and I was planning to return to Cofton later this year until I discovered how much they charge for a dog in July and September. Therefore, I shall try another C&CC club site where dogs are free.

Enjoy your trip!

Either adult sites or sites without play areas would probably be choice although I regularly camp solo on all sorts of sites and have rarely been hassled by kids or crowds...even better now I am fully retired and can camp mid week. As such I can't really recommend one particularly quiet site, it is often pot luck.

hi bob. been a while since I last chatted to you. I was wondering how you are getting on after the problem with the eye. my knees are my nig problem now. arthritis letting me know who is boss. I can walk for about 1 mile and that's it. sitty down time for a while. I am rebuilding my camping gear now. and hope to get a top quality mountain style tent for some cold weather camping. they sure do cost a lot.but worth every penny, anyways. hope you are in good health down there.

Hello Superpup. I was wondering where you had disappeared to. Nice to hear from you again. My eye is fine, thank you...just doesn't work any more but the other one more than compensates. If Lord Nelson and Long John Silver can manage, so can I.

Sorry to hear about your arthritis and hope it doesn't curtail your camping altogether. Keep smiling...face muscles are about the only ones that don't hurt as you get older

There is a train station right next door to Ashurst Camping in the Forest, and a pub and a shop.

Yes, the station is Ashurst. One tip though...don't feed the New Forest ponies or they will rip your tent apart searching for more

That's the problem with horses, they bite at the front, kick at the back, and are uncomfortable in the middle.
