Hi everyone. Been procrastinating about camping solo for ages. But as I have next week off, think it's about time I just do it. Done a dry run of putting up the tent in the garden and all okay. Wanted to ask if anyone knows of any nice sites on the East coast, near Scarborough, Whitby - that are particularly good for single campers?
Hello Amanda,
Welcome to the site.
I can't give you any help regarding specific sites, but would suggest you use the campsite search facility available here.
If you use option 2 you can search using the map for the area you want and read the excellent reviews left by contributors to this forum which may give you some ideas.
I can not see an option to select "suitable for solo campers", but I suppose this is a subjective judgement.
I have camped on my own for many years all over Europe and have had no major issues.
I've been a solo female camper for seven years now and love it. I've stayed at many different sites in that time, some have become my favourites and I return to those regularly. I suppose it depends what you mean by 'suitable for solo camper' - I've never come across any sites advertising themselves as such but I can recommend a couple of nice ones in roughly the area you're thinking of.
Serenity at Hinderwell, seven miles north of Whitby, has a 'peaceful camping policy' so is nice and quiet and has nice countryside views, and Centenary Way at Filey, is a well-kept site with spacious pitches - I've stayed there more than once and loved it, and as a solo camper I've never had any issues with either site.

Good luck, and just go for it!

While being suitable for solo campers is subjective, there are sites that do not allow solo campers.
There was a report some time ago about a widow who had used a site for years with her husband, he died and she carried on alone, but was refused entry to a site they had used together as it had a no single campers rule.
I read that post online too, Woodman, and it is something I would not have thought to check on. Felt very sorry for the lady, not easy taking those first 'lone' steps.
One of the reasons for being a member of C&CC is for camping solo at their club sites.
If I am interested in a site, I would enquire about solo discount if their pricing structure does not mention price by number of person.
If they do not offer solo discount then I shall move on and look for one that does.

Hello Amanda. I was in Whitby the other day and stayed in a new camp site in the middle of the town. Go down the road on north side of the river, turn left. Go up the very steep hill towards the Abbey and YHA and the camp site in on the right hand site about 200 yards. Everything is new and very clean. It did cost £10 but I thought it was worth it. (Hostel was £35) If you are going there by push bike, don't miss the 20 miles of disused railway track, route 1 that runs completely off road to Scarborough (10 miles gradually up and 10 miles down the other side, pure joy), almost best track in my 2800 mile bike ride. Have fun. Tony
