I solo (well me and the dog) camp, albeit in the relative luxury of a touring caravan these days, but somehow never seem to be as alone as the term 'solo' might imply! Inevitably I know someone living in the area, so we take the opportunity to meet up, or other friends are camping in the general area and again we'll get together. Last couple of trips I've planned as solo trips and once they were aware friends have asked if they could tag along, so my 'One Man and His Dog' solo camps have tended to be quite social affairs, in fact the last but one trip I didn't have time to meet up with all the people I could have done!
bridgeywidge's " so what"??? If you go alone .... so what. NO-ONE else to please no-one to grump.... enjoy" is spot on. I can find more than enough things to do and places to visit to both interest and entertain me, I don't actually NEED anyone else (well, need my dog, life without a dog is grim!)! Been on enough holidays with miserable/unhappy/discontented partners to fully appreciate shedding that burden, and having the freedom to enjoy what I want.
The 'Covid crowd' newcomers to camping are a bit aloof/indifferent, but old school campers are a helpful/jolly/sociable bunch so it's rare not to engage in a bit of daily chit-chat with somebody and you never seem to feel isolated.
OK I have the benefit of being a big bloke with what has been described as 'Alpha male presence' (I think that was supposed to mean I don't look like a natural 'victim' or someone to cross! Ooo Err, never considered myself scary! ) which possible keeps any unpleasant sorts well clear of me, but never felt fearful or concerned about being solo on a formal camp site, I can appreciate that a lone woman or even a less robust man may have concerns, but by and large I consider campsites safer places than the general outside world. I think the 'Covid crowd' may have reduced that factor slightly, they don't seem to consider themselves in a mutual benefit 'club' as the old school campers do!
I'm a sociable enough sort, often go away with groups, or individual friends, or partners if there is one on the current scene, but more than happy to do my own thing solo camping - a lot to be said in it's favour, and probably very few downsides once you shed any unjustified fears about the concept.

I solo camp with my dog since 2009 in tents, and now in a custom-converted PVC, with 8 sites/39 nights already booked for 2022 so far.
Prefer it this way as I would rather be on my own doing my own things as and when my mood takes me; than to go with other people's agendas.
In addition, planning for one is much easier than planning for a group with different requirements for dates and locations, etc., etc...
I may meet up with a handful of other units for a small number of trips, however, I would be largely on my own.
