Funnily enough I was reading about that recently, but not sure where! I believe from what I read that it is possible but far from simply swapping one for the other! I don't think the cut outs in wall match up, so some extra cutting/making good is necessary! Can't remember which way the conversion was being done either, but bet your life one way will be easier than the other!

Good luck.

I have heard on various forums of quite a few people who are so unhappy with their Dometic toilet that they have gone to a great deal of trouble and expense to replace it with a Thetford one. A pretty damning account of the unreliability of the Dometic one. They must be a cheaper alternative to the manufacturers.

I am one of those people who is dissatisfied with the Dometic toilet.

Having owned both, the Dometic and the Thetford, their is no comparison.

The first one was changed at the first service, and now it has failed again 18 months later.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. We have had both toilets and i very much prefer the Thetford. The light diesnt come on when the toilet is half full or full. We are having problems with the Dometic fridge beeping for no reason. Why did they change these appliances.

Probably due to cost.

Interestingly Coachman have reverted to the Thetford toilet for the 2022 caravans.

depends on model I have changed my dometic to a thetford and it was a straight swap that was on a 2015 camper unfortunately the C200 cwe has been superseded not sure if the replacement is a straight swap.

I have recently turned down two new vans as both had dometic toilets which in my experience are rubbish

We had similar issue with fridge beeping. Searching the internet found this from another forum that helped.
“ Behind the clear plastic cover of the fridge light is a 4-wire harness that connects to the light and door switch. The door switch is electrically "open" when the door is closed, and electrically "closed" when the door is open. I believe the issue is due to condensation shorting the two door switch pins on this wire harness, tricking the control board into thinking the door is open when it is not. I believe this because when I disconnect this wire harness, the contacts on the light/switch assembly are wet with condensation. If I dry with a paper towel and re-connect, the problem goes away, but only until the condensation builds up again (couple hours if you're lucky). The only remedy I have found to make it through the night without this annoying beeping is to leave this wire harness disconnected. The only downside to this is that the interior light will not work when you open the door. Other than that, the fridge operates fine. If you really need the light, just dry the contacts and re-connect the wire harness. Kind of a pain, but the only solution I've found”
This worked for us. Be gentle easing off the cover and work from the back and ease forward. I hope this helps.

We've also had our Dometic toilet replaced and had a Thetford put in. Numerous problems with the Dometic, on our first outing (12 month old caravan) the cassette simply wouldn't come out. Didn't want to pull too hard or be too rough in case we broke the thing. Dealer told us to bring it in and they'd remove it. They couldn't either, so we had to leave the van with them.

Got a phonecall a couple of days later to say they'd removed it, but had broken the whole toilet in the process, as it just wouldn't come out. So, a new toilet had to be ordered and fitted. We had by then read of other problems and asked about replacing it with a Thetford, but they wouldn't. So another Dometic was fitted. This one fared better, but we had problems with the light not going off after it was emptied, so guesswork as to whether it was really full or not. OK, you have a fair idea, but that's not the point and the light should still work correctly, not stay on when the toilet is empty. The other irritating thing with it is that you can't empty the water out of it, all you can do is keep flushing it; whoever designed such a useless toilet? And another thing is that the wheels are that flimsy, you can't wheel it, for fear of breaking them, so you end up carrying it every time, not good to say the least. I've read of wheels breaking, so we never risked using them for that purpose, which is another stupid design fault.

Our patience ran out, as we just couldn't trust it after all that. We always wondered when emptying it, whether the cassette would come out or not. So we had it changed and are very pleased we did. Yes, it cost a few hundred, but cheaper than changing what is otherwise a van we really like.

No, the Thetford doesn't line up exactly but the dealer did a fantastic job and you wouldn't know it was not the original toilet.

possibly being a "bit thick here" but i am right in thinking that the cassette itself does not need changing, just the pan and its connections

Hi Ina, I notice its a year ago you had your Dometic toilet changed to a Thetford, can I ask if it has been successfull doing it, have you had any problems. I'm in process of getting my dealer to change mine for me though they say its a big job, did you have to change the fresh water filler door or is yours connected straight to the internal water supply. Any advise you can offer please would be most appriecated.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, we are very pleased with the Thetford and have had no problems with it at all. It's a delight to use and not worry about whether the cassette will come out when it needs emptying. No, the fresh water filler door wasn't changed, it was blocked off, and glued in place, so from the outside nothing looks different. Inside it looks like it's the original toilet, there are no signs of it having been changed at all, you wouldn't know. And yes, it is now connected straight to the internal water supply.

Hi..
Me, like many others is unhappy with Dometic toilet. I did a swap and installed a Thetford C223S.
I first planned to install a Thetford C263, but because the tank is broader, i then also had to install a new door. So i dropped it. The Dometic door have a higher cutout so i would have needed a bigger door.
The Thetford C223S can be used with the Dometic door. The lower part body of C223S is lower than the Dometic so there was a 5-6 mm opening between body and wall. I made a small plastic frame that covers the opening. To fasten the lower part body in upper area, i made an aluminium bracket which is fastened to toilet and wall. It also holds the plastic frame in place.
The cutout for the flush button was too high for Thetford, som i also had to make a plastic cover there too. See pictures.
