Good evening all 👋🏽

It's my first time on a forum so grateful for any help/advice from knowledgeable folk....

I have a twenty year old Compass Corona which is splendid but an awful noise has started coming intermittently from the Trauma hot water tank. This happens when I run the water but not every time.

I changed the pump because I first thought it was that but no, it is definitely coming from inside the boxed area. I don't believe the filament has burnt out because it's never run without water in it and it was working just fine before.

The noise is so loud and really sounds as if it's grinding against something inside.

I've not looked inside yet as it's such a pain to get in.

It's run on electric I think but it might also be gas, I'm not sure..

You don’t say if you’re still getting hot water or not.
I have no idea about the noise, but I’m sure other people will. Meanwhile, you could try the troubleshooting section on the Truma website - https://www.truma.com/gb/service/

Thanks for the troubleshooting guide🙏🏽 We do still have hot water and cold water but I'm scared to use because of the awful noise which I'm worried is damaging the machine.
I'm going to take it apart tonight....

that noise really does sound like its coming from your pump, it sounds like its running dry of water, but before you start taking anything apart make sure its not air locked by bleeding your taps correctly in the caravan and get the water to flow smoothly with it just on cold water before turning the water heater on. its hard to see it being anything within the water heater tho as there isnt any kind of pump or anything mechanical inside it

The screeching noise is classic dry bearing(s) on an electric motor! Now, where in the system that is, I can only guess at! Not the water pump if, you've changed it.

Could be a fan for the gas flue?

If it is a Truma water heater there aren't any moving parts inside. It's basically a big flat enclosed kettle, with element and thermostat.

Thanks Marg6 🙏🏽 We did change the pump already and the sound seems like it is coming from inside the box on the left (where the hot water is). The taps are running smoothly and I've not had the hot water heater on in a few days now and it's still making the noise.

Good to know - I wonder if it's the element then and maybe it's burnt out?

A faulty element will usually have two different results. Blown, no heat or Blown and shorted to earth, and that will blow a circuit breaker/Earth leakage trip. Either way you wouldn't be getting hot water.

I can only suggest isolating anything else nearby, if ther last thing connected is your water heater then it's a strange one. Perhaps a baffle has come loose inside and the water flow is causihng it to spin or move around internally?

Just a thought, could it be scale within the boiler body that has broken away and 'swirling' around inside the boiler when water is run?

hubby says its the impeller broken off in the pump or the bearings for the impeller

That fits - our washing machine was screeching loudly towards the end of its life & clothes were coming out too wet because the pump wasn’t working 100%.

Wow thank you everyone for such helpful ideas and suggestions.

It definitely is screeching and grinding - at Marg6 we have just changed the pump to a new one (it wasn't making the noise before) so it's really unlikely it's a broken pump HOWEVER I have another brand new one so we can try and swap that one to see if it's still happening (thanks to your husband for his help)

at Edwind, we will also try and look inside the hot water boiler to see if there is anything moving around in there that shouldn't be.
