We bought a new Elddis Avante 454 in November 2019. We bought it from Dumfried Caravan Center who have now closed. At the last service in November 2023 they found damp near one front offside window and suggested getting it rechecked after three month. It is even wose now.
I asked Elddis if I could use a local mobile engineer to do the warranty work.
Their reply disgusts me. They said
“Thank you for your recent email
As stated in the hand book all warranty repair work has to be carried our by either your selling retailer or any Elddis approved service centre.
I appreciate it is difficult finding a Elddis approved service centre in Scotland at the moment after Dumfries caravans have now closed.
You may have to travel a little further for the repair.
I have added a list of Elddis approved service centres that may be able to help.
Assuring you of our best intentions at all times.”
The nearest place they suggested is 170 miles away and Elddis have not said they will do the work but I need to ask them. What sort of service is that?
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
One of the real bugbears of caravans is the appalling after sales service and often rediculous conditions imposed! - ask people who've bought at major shows far from home and then found any warranty work needs doing at the selling dealer, and that could be even further away at the other end of the country! - hardly reasonably or practical!
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Thanks, in my email I asked Elddis if I could use one of those companies and they said no.

In that case they are NOT supporters of the Approved Workshop Scheme (assuming the workshops can indeed do the work!), and a complaint should be lodged with the Scheme to have their name removed from the list as it's a grossly misleading claim and in breach of consumer rights!
Sorry to hear the AWS doesn't seem to be of any help to you.
I don't think the OP needs to know where the Service Centres are, Elddis has already informed him of his options.
------------- XVI yes?

My advice would be to contact your county council as they should have a Trading Standards department that will advise what course of action is required. As Dumfries Caravan Centre has permanently closed, as a consumer you still have legal rights which the Trading Standards should offer support in getting a recognised dealer to undertake the work required within a reasonable distance. Elddis maybe a caravan and motorhome manufacturer but they are not above the law which under any circumstance should adhere to the consumer rights legislation.
Hearing this seems to confirm what I have suspected for a good while, recent caravans are not as well built as older ones. Damp in a 5 year old caravan??
I have an Elddis too and the first sign of damp appeared when it was 30 years old! Having it repaired professionally was not economically viable (they wanted more to repair it than I had bought it for) so I repaired it myself. Hopefully I'll get a few more years out of it.
According to that link there are approved caravan service centres in Livingston, Kendal, Dunfermline and Kircaldy, all much less than 170 miles away from Dumfries.
Looking at it from an Elddis point of view, they would need to have one of their approved centres to carry out the work to ensure a certain standard and also to ensure the work is genuinely required, I'm sure there are people who try to scam money out of them for work not done.
Also surely it's not their fault that Dumfries Caravan Centre closed ?
In this case sadly Elddis are correct although the solution is awkward for the OP. CABs or Trading Standards will agree with Elddis as technically the caravan was not bought from Elddis and there is no contract between Elddis and the consumer.
Thanks for this. I see that thee are places a lot closer than the one's on the list that Elddis sent me. I have contacted a couple and am waiting for their replies.

I do wonder if I have a case against the owner of Dumfries Caravan Centre. To accept a caravan for servicing in November and return it with the note to have it rechecked in three months when they knew they would close in a few weeks is dishonest.

I think I might go down that route. I will have a good look at the area and see if it is a simple job to replace mastic or rebed a rail. I know it will not have any guarentee but if it solves the problem I'm happy. A big advantage of this is that it is the new Solid construction so there are no strips of wood in the walls.

I went through an identical situation myself in 2023 whereby I purchased a car from Cazoo which was very local to me. They got me to take out the extended warranty for MOT and servicing at that depot then 6 weeks on the local Cazoo dealership closed down which they must have known about at the time of sale. After contacting Cazoo afterwards they told me that I would have to take my car to the next nearest dealership which was 20 miles away so rather enter a debate I raised the case with 'Resolver' who got the company to respond. I won my case which I was refunded all my money by Cazoo which I had paid by direct debit for the extended service warranty which I then closed the case.
In my previous post I mentioned the Trading Standards but if you open a case with 'Resolver' (which is free) you may well get a successful result.
I have used 'Resolver' on 3 separate occasions regarding other companies and each time have been satisfied with the result.
