I have a problem with my carver 3000s auto fire in my 1996 jubilee courier, it will not ignite, I cant even hear the ignitor sparking, I have added some images of the internals, does the auto igniter get its power from the vans leisure battery as I cant find a battery pack, the gas blowers work as I can hear them, will that still provide hot air or does the fire need to be lit at the same time to supply hot air? it has the electric option so at site I can power it by the ehu, has anyone got any ideas as to what could be causing the gas problem. my cooker oven and grill all work fine, so there is gas in the bottle and its getting though, I cant see any other isolation valve but that shouldn't stop the igniter sparking.

Thanks

in the above image what is the white connector for? the lead plugs into the other larger connection point

the above shows the pcb board inners, it has a switch part which connects to a white plastic plunger

this is the controls for the fanmaster which seems to work as I can hear the fan fine when selected, have not tried it for heat yet as we have just got the van

the below image shows the other control panel, what does this operate? it does show an alarm red light at the bottom when turned on

I see the cascade 2 is for my water heater, what could be causing the alarm light to light up?

The igniter is powered by 12 volt so even on electric hook up won't function unless you have a fully charged leisure battery. That's the most likely cause of the alarm because there is gas coming through but nothing to ignite it.

I take it that is for the cascade 2, what about the fire, is that the same 12v supply for ignitor?

Yes, the Cascade 2 if operated by gas will also need a source of ignition the same for the gas fire and fridge if being operated by gas. Basically, any appliance being operated by the means of gas needs a 12 volt source ignition to ignite it.

ah, ok, that might explain why I have no ignition on my cooker, oven, or grill had to light them with a match, do you know what amp the fuse would be for the igniter circuit if one exists, or could it simply be that my battery could be low, my lights all work and my blowers come on off the battery

Thanks

Some cookers don't have an igniter so the grill, oven and gas rings have to be lighted with a naked flame. It's only the other appliances that actually have an igniter such as a gas fire, fridge and hot water tank that need a a leisure battery to source the ignition. There won't be a fuse for the igniters as fuses are only used to protect an electrical circuit which the igniter is just a clicker that produces a spark.
If you consider that your battery is low then you need to test it with a voltmeter first and check the voltage. If the battery is low and you try to ignite gas with a weak spark then it will just blow back without any success.

ok got ya, in my images does it seem as though any parts are missing, I can not hear anything when I press down on the knob, there is just nothing at all, I cant even see what would ignite a flame, I thought it would like look a spark plug top somewhere which would spark and light the gas, really at a loss with this to be honest.

I couldn't tell you if any parts are missing as I'm not a technician as such, I just know from reading caravanning handbooks and personal experience how the appliances function on gas operation. The igniter as far as I'm aware is a solid wire with an is an insulation sleeve (to stop it short circuiting) that leads to the appliance but that's about as much as I know technically. If your leisure battery is low or not holding a charge then you need to get that sorted first otherwise you won't detect any other independent problem if the igniter is not functioning effectively.

the power needed to create a spark is next to nothing.. my carver 3000 fire igniter is powered by two AA batteries.. 3 volts in total..

they are not all 12 volts and the ones that are wont need a fully charged leisure battery to power the igniter.. some power will be needed but very little..

the igniter on my fire is at the bottom on the right.. two wire go from it..one is an earth the other goes to the burner and it does work just like a spark plug.. but its all inside and you cant really see it if it isnt sparking..

trog100, have you got an image of the location of the igniter and what it looks like, does your control rod end go into a little box with a pcb board in it the same as mine? I can not seem to find anything that looks like a box which would contain batteries thats why im thinking maybe something is missing.

Thanks

my igniter box is in the far right of the fire.. the opposite side to where the rod is.. its on the floor and quite visible..

it slides into a floor mounted clip.. its about 4 inches long and 2 inches high..

if your van is meant to have such a little 3 volt AA battery powered igniter box and its missing you would not notice..

i mentioned it just to point out they are not all 12 volt leisure battery powered..

my van is 1995 era..

trog

Hi Yeah I definately have not got one of those, on the right hand side it is completely empty, nothing their apart from the hose running at the back for the blower arrangement, I will have to try Gary at arcsystems and see what he thinks, might be my PCB is buggered or the igniter.

Just out of interest what colour are the two leads going into it, ill have a check tonight and see if there are any leads lying there that connect to nothing. Thanks

i spoke to gary recently about my igniter.. it was sparking all the time.. the opposite problem to what you have.. he he

he suggested i fit an on/off switch in the battery supply lead.. my box has a little spark window on it.. you can see if its working or not..

you have the electronic unit which can fail.. from that goes a wire to the burner and an earth.. make sure the thing is getting some power and make sure the lead isnt shorting.. having said that you would hear it if it was..

if its getting power i would think the electronics have failed.. your circuit board part..

when you turn the gas control knob sparks should start up.. when you press it down gas comes though.. the sparks should stop when the pilot light heats up..

trog

ps.. my box fits where you have all that empty space.. i do think your one is different.. yours looks to be near the gas control knob..
