Hi all

Got slight dripping from over bed roof light, had a look outside and the sealant appears to be coming from found the window housing “the caravan is an 11 year old coachman”
What is the best sealant to use?
TIA

Usual recommendation is either:

Sikaflex 512, or Soudall Fixall.

Plenty of posts on here about how to use.

Whilst googling the above recommendation.. thank you Jim oldham... looking for suppliers came across a comment saying sika EBT4 is the same product as 512 which is just repackaged to rip off us camping folk
Has anybody used / can confirm this ?
TIA

Brian, I've used both 512 and EBT and just find the EBT seems to have a longer curing time, it will be fine for the rooflight reseal.

Incidentally, are you planning to just reseal around the edges or go for the whole hog? Personally, I'd advise removal of the existing rooflight completely, fully clean all old mastic etc then seal and refit.

Good advice from G7ACU.

I'm sure I have read somewhere that the trade uses Soudall Fixall.

Screwfix sell it. No connection.

going to remove with turps

Think the advice is to clean up with meths to degrease.
Please excuse me if that is your intention.

Thank you Big Brian for your last post.
So often on here plenty of advice or suggestions are given and then the post goes dead without anyone knowing the outcome.

Hi Dave,
Know what you mean , I just think it’s polite to reply if you can , I try if I can post stuff to try and help ... if I can , it’s usually in the way of candid site reviews 🙄

Good that your drip has stopped. But do be aware the actual seal is between the van roof and the rooflight. It would appear there is a fault you repointing may work for years but the problem can return. Similar post to yours on this forum. The rooflight was eventually removed and the fault was a small piece of paper had been left on the sealing tape during manufacture. Your 11 year old van may well go another x number of years with the sealant fix but the actual seal clearly has penetration. My advice would be to regularly check particularly over winter storage. PS. I am a caravan repairer and construction engineer now retired. Best regards

Well done Brian, thanks for the feedback, its always nice to hear back instead of folk just disappearing into the ether
Just out of curiosity, did you remove the roof-light and reseal as your update suggests, or just point it up?

Hi ,
Yea just repointed , but went to great lengths to remove all mastic from initial install , took me a good hour and a half , the thing was I removed the actual roof light which gave me great access all round the roof light , so will keep an eye on it but fingers crossed 👍
Thanks for all additional suggestions / recommendations

Well done Brian, pleased you're sorted but do please keep an eye on it. The resealing to the edge (pointing) will be OK for a while I'm sure, but long term, full removal is a better option. It's not as scary as you might think at all, plenty of tutorials on YouTube (I used to have a brilliant link to repairs but site seems to have closed down).
Good luck.
