I had more or less the same problem with the 240v option. It turned out to be the heater element and it was pretty straight forward to replace. I got one from here http://www.leisureshopdirect.com/ for about £32 which is a damn sight cheaper than a new one.
Its a straight replacement. The arkward part is releasing the metal shroud that holds the insulation in place around the pipe assembly. Other than that its a doddle!
be aware though! You can't actually get the fridge working out of position without a 12v supply connected as this provides power for the fridge electronics. I bought a couple of 6v lantern batteries, wired them in series and used that.
