I've got a ratchet crimper and although i get a half decent crimp i would recommend you solder the connection as well , i've done this to all my solar panel cabling to get the best connections possible .

I crimp first then solder , in my opinion it's worth soldering to get that better connection , you want to get every watt you can out of solar panels .

I use a flux pen from Maplins http://www.maplin.co.uk/flux-dispensing-pen-33849 it's not absolutely necessary though and not cheap either .

On the subject of soldering irons, I bought a 12v one from the pound shop a few years ago.  I carry it in the car and have used it numerous times for various small electrical joints.

I have more powerful irons at home but I wouldn't be without the £1 one - can't complain at the price.
