Hey guys,
Quick update, I took the inner trim off yesterday and it was pretty obvious the Silicone Sealent repair job done by my nephew was woefully inadequate.
You can see where the sealent has simply come away from the roof and skylight fitting and has gone hard and brittle. The tarp came out and covered it up untill i have the right equptment to sort it out. The mastick roll is definately the way to go, as there is a lot of flex in the roof around the skylight. My guessing is the tow to my brothers house was enough to disturb the old silicone and crack it / make it peel away.
Luckily the roof has been re-lined so dehumidifier is in there drawing the damp out of the air, and nothing is rotten or sodden with water.
I noticed today, at the end of the village I live is a caravan dealer (North Staffs Caravans) & behind there is a caravan dismantler - stocking lots of used parts and accessories. Will see if i can get a replacement skylight the right size.
If im going to do it, I may aswell do it properly
Thanks for all the advice so far.

Hi Neal, watching your thread with interest! When you've finished, do you fancy doing mine! LOL!
Seriously that american tape looks like it might cure some of the problems I'm having with my van - has anyone found a place we can get it in the uk?
Does flashing tape do the same thing and can you get it in white instead of silver?

Please don't use fibreglass! It is very brittle, and isn't adhesive enough to stick to anything permanently - apart from Polyester resin (fibreglass). The result will be a leak that will cause you more problems than you had in the first place as water will be trapped inside it!
If you need to build an area up, use epoxy. Epoxy is an excellent adhesive and has much more strength than fibreglass (Polyester) resin. Epoxy can be thickened to a stiff paste by mixing micro-balloons/microfibres with it.
Sikaflex is an excellent sealant and adhesive but you shouldn't use it on something you might want to take apart again for maintenance.

Try some gentle heat and a scraper to remove the fibreglass.
Providing the sealant between rails and 'van hasn't completely disintegrated, this stuff;
Creeping Crack Cure
is excellent for sealing screw holes, pin hole leaks, hairline cracks etc. It could save you a whole load of work removing rails that don't really need it.

I will second that! I just found out where a leak was coming in on my caravan with it. It's a bit like milky water and just runs into any little holes. I spotted a rusty screw on a trim at the front, undid the trim and poured some into the hole. It came out on the inside and worked pretty well. It seems that the last owner used a screw that was too long for the job and it had gone right through into the middle of the wall, and had been taking the water in with it. I didn't notice this as it was behind a curtain! Waiting for it to dry out now so that I can replace the veneer and decorate!

Ahh I was looking at that stuff on eBay the other day, so do you think I should apply that on the rails rather than removing them and resealing from scratch.
I've had a good look and I can't see anything coming from the rails up top or on the side, bit there is a tiny 1" damp mark on the rear corner in the shower / toilet cubby hole. I prefer the idea of not removing the rails, ill buy some and try that first.
As for the "gentle heat" to remove the f/glass what would I use to apply it? Boiling water? Or very gentle with a blow torch?
Sorry for all the questions, just want to tackle this in the right way, not butcher it lol
Cheers
Neal
1).
I would try Captain T's first, then monitor the situation carefully.
2).
A hairdryer or carefully used hot air paint stripper should do it.
Have fun!
