As another option in a camper van with a separate leisure battery and split charging, there are compressor driven fridges on the market that can be run off a leisure battery for much longer than a 3 way fridge. However, they are expensive, and only work on 12 volts. No gas or 240 volt options, although you can run them on 12 volt backed up by the charger running on mains.

They are probably better suited to boats, as gas can be a real hazard on them. If a leak occurs it can't vent outside like in a caravan, but collects in the bilges. Until you next try and start the engine, then..........

Best Regards,
Colin

Ok so from the van not been turned over this week to switching into idlyling mode, and putting the 12v fridge switch on, how long before it will come on. Can you have it on when your on the move then?
Sorry just can't get my head round electrics

Yes you can have it on when you are on the move. There will be a voltage sensitive relay somewhere that spots that your alternator is churning out 13+ volts and the 12v element will be switched on all the time your car engine is running above tick-over. You must realise that the 12V cooling element is not that great and it is best to fill the fridge with pre-frozen goods before you set off. The 12v element is really only about keeping the status quo whilst travelling. not for much else. Once parked up you need to switch to gas or electric hookup to keep the fridge working.
