Caravan tyres should be change every 5 years regardless how good the tread is. The tyres stand for long periods in the same postion with weight of van causing a flat on bottom of tyre, unlike a car which is in most cases moved on a daily basis.
how often do you rotate tyre while in storage or on a campsite. I'd say never, the only time the tyres get turned is when you tow the van.
Tyres are also effected by ultra violet light ( sunlight ) how many of you cover your tyres with awing skirt while on site or in storage not just the nearside under the awning.
if tyres are kept shaded and rotated on a weekly basis you would most probably get many more years usage out of a set but most of us just don't bother.
IF you have seen at tyre blow on a caravan on the motorway you would not be so tight as to say there is nothing wrong with the tread.

I have witnessed such a horror story on the M6 the only part of the van remaining was the chassis and floor and that had flipped so floor was below chassis with one whole tyre and one wheel rim every thing else was scattered over 3 lanes for about 50 yards.

Can any of you knowledgeable people explain to me why the National Caravanning Council Annual touring caravan service check sheet states... (Advice tyres to be replaced if over 7 years old) and not 5.

Well Naturalist 123, hope your mention of tight was not referring to me.
I dont think you were , because you started your sentence with IF.
Anyway new tyres on , old tyres really badly split on the inside, only visible from under the van.

Change as a matter of course after 7yrs whatever but examine at every service & change earlier if there are signs of cracks & perishing as in case of op after only 5yrs.

The above advice to caravan service personnel assumes knowledge & ability to examine tyres & recognise faults. The advice to change at 5yrs whatever is for caravan owners & assumes no knowledge of tyres.

Mentioned this in another thread, you see I've just had the van serviced and informed on the service sheet that the tyres need replacing as they are 5 years old, but no faults or defects found by the service engineer.

So makes you wonder way another professional body states they are good up to 7 years (providing no defects are visible).

I'll get them changed before the next outing, peace of mind.

I also don't think many blow out, but deflate unnoticed and get shredded by the wheel rim.

Thanks for the reply's

Talking of tyres I have read on this site people mention Maxi-milers, my last van came with them fitted 185 x14's but I could not obtain them in this country 14's so had two Nexens of same size etc fitted on my front drive for £100,
the old were 5 1/2 years old and looked as good as new tread walls inside and out and I asked fitter why they should be replaced the running tyre pressure was 60 lbs per square inch so he blew the first one up to 68lbs before removing, (there was a loud bang and bits of tyre in his van) the tyre was still on the rim but had a hole and a 6inch split in the outside wall. SO I have always stuck to the 5 year rule from date of manufacture on side of tyre. By the way tyre fitters are not allowed to fit new tyre's over 3 year old. ??? Tyres dry out in storage the ideal way to store them would be in french chalk in lidded steel containers most probably be good for fitting after ten years, can you seen tyre shops doing this no way.
