I would add to that the fact that the battery is used to smooth and stabilise the charger output. As most of the caravan's essential equipment, lights, pumps etc, is designed to work off 12 volts, I would consider a battery essential.
A lot of foreign caravans don't have batteries, I only had one fitted as I
had a motor mover fitted,all 12V worked of the transformer which gave a stabilised output.
I bought my Burstner new and the battery and charger cost me £800+,in the 17years I used it I never had a power outage when on site.
