I want to check my caravan for damp. This looked good and cheap and I wondered if people on here think it would be any use
this on Amazon it is only £11.99

I have the same one, it is not a Pro version, but will give a very good indication
ps
May be slightly cheaper on e bay.

That is often the case. Sometimes I look things up on Amazon, then check for the same item on ebay, and often ebay is cheaper. Sometimes MUCH cheaper! I recently looked for something on Amazon and they wanted £198 for it but I got the identical item elsewhere for £118. Amamzon are certainly not always the cheapest, and unless you are a Prime member you will get charged postage too.

I got a damp meter with a german name from ebay, that works very well for about £20. That said, it looks suspiciously like a number of others for sale on there for varying costs. They are all probably made in the same Chinese factory anyway, choose what you pay. Its the retailer deciding how much they want to make that changes the price.

Recently I was talking to my Caravan service engineer regarding my damp check readings, and why its not a good idea to test on a cold and damp day without drying the surface first. He gave me a demonstration of how the vinyl floor covering would show a reading of around 40% Damp when just straight tested with the meter, then dried the surface off using a sheet of kitchen paper, removing surface Condensation, and the test was then repeated and was instantly down to 12% and no action required.

The meter he was using was a high tech model, and he is a mobile workshop approved to undertake warantee work and servicing by several leading Uk Manufacturers. It did rather make me realise though, how easy it would be to make the mistake of having expensive damp repair work done on your caravan, which may have been totally unnecesary had this information been available and followed. Thankfully the rest of the readings around the interior using the same machine were fine first time.

Thanks for all the replies.
I'll go out soon and check it and see what readings I get.

We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
