Can I be possibly really thick here but how come we dont sterilise our pipes in our homes but have to in a van?

at home the water pipes are in constant use where as caravan pipes are left with standing water in them.

Oh the time I had trying to tell my Mum and Dad (in their 80s) when they returned to caravanning after many years that they needed to sterilise the water sys! Most of the comments went along the line of, '...been caravanning for years, never did this... never got ill from it... never done it in all the years..' blah blah.

In the end I did it for them. But I remembered getting iffy tummys when they took me & sis caravanning when we were kids!

Or maybe...

Left standing in our old houses the water absorbs the lead in the piping which kills all the bugs


Which leads me to ask "if sterilising the water is so important how come as a species we exist?"

And to '60mph is that all' one minute to boil a kettle takes ours 15 mins to luke warm!

Some of us dont rune like the people in india etc,but we only hear of people thats ill from drinking dirty water here, from word of mouth or sitting in a docs surgery..

Ahh... you're talking two different things here the water in India and a few other third world countries is contaminated which should obviously be purified before using.
The water used on a caravan site has been treated and chlorinated (that's the bleach bit that someone mentioned earlier) just running this through your caravan pipe work (and changing or permanently removing any filter) is enough to sterilize the system.
The legionnaires disease that often occurs in hospitals starts in the cooling systems - these use a constantly recycled water which has to be treated with an exact amount of chemical on a regular basis to prevent the bugs from breeding, of course when someone forgets to order a new batch of chemicals the problems start (and get worse when the media hears about it).
