I am a graphic designer by trade and have worked with advertising agencies in the past, who have websites to 'advertise' their services. These sites show examples of their work, and although are in the 'public domain' so to speak, the work examples are definately covered by copyright.
Work which is protected by copyright does not have to be registered, and lasts for 50 years AFTER the creator's death. Work covered by copyright usually (although not always) means 2-dimensional work such as design for print, photography, advertising slogans, maps, drawings depicting 3-dimensional objects such as fashion design, product and furniture design, a musical score, a play script, a logo etc. Actual 3-dimensional objects are normally covered by patents, but there are exceptions.
One thing however which is not covered by copyright is the English language, but certain words portrayed in particular order, such as advertising slogans (eg. Coke, the real thing), play and television scripts, are.
Logos, although the design is covered by copyright, the word generally isn't and has to be registered (eg. registered trade mark) to stop anyone else from using it. Generally the word and logo design form the registered trade mark as one entity.
While I'm almost sure the above points are true from when I used to teach graphic design a long time ago, copyright law is extremely complex, and I stand to be corrected if anyone knows otherwise.
A point to note however, copyright law was mostly written before we had the internet, so there may be some grey areas. However, just because things are on the internet, such as MP3 music, pictures of celebrities, and yes, logos for instance, doesn't automatically give anyone the right to use it even for personal use. It is actually illegal to video tape programmes from television, or record programmes from the radio, but as long as financial gain is not implied, authorities turn a blind eye. How many discos pay royalties to each and every artist used in one evening? The Performing Arts Society demands they should pay a percentage if they are charging for the session. The list goes on....!
