Ok guys, I am nearly ready to fit the large front window in and I have a question or two.

There is mastic in the seal around where the window fits into it. There is also dry mastic around the seal where it fits on to the frame. Is it usual to have mastic actually inside the seal where the window fits in or is that another botched it job from previous owner?

If I have to mastic the seal in that area would a bonding agent be better than a non-drying mastic?

This is all new to me and I value your advice/opinions.

Right now a new seal is not an option but it is probably something I will do in the future. I need to get this van on the road for mid-May or the trip we booked is a no-no.

Hi Barney , if your in any doubt use sealant between the rubber seal and the window , i would still go with a non-drying mastic ( like Silaflex 512 Caravan ) , you can get black mastics ( seen it in caravan shops ) , but don't use silicone sealant .

Is it usual to have mastic actually inside the seal where the window fits in or is that another botched it job from previous owner?
Don't really know , i'd say it depends on how the caravan maker puts it together , some may use mastic while others don't .
Have a look on Als website http://www.alanparkers.dsl.pipex.com/ there's a write-up on how to reseal a fixed window .

That would have been easy without the stupid line of mastic on the inner edge! Result? Mastic everywhere.

Been there done that ain't it fun. By the time I got to resealing my 5th and final window I had sussed it out and had hardly any mess at all

Hmm. Best play safe then and run a bead of Sikaflex around the inner edge of the seal.

When we did ours fixed window there was mastic in the seal, we also used mastic on a roll.

A bit of advice TAKE YOUR TIME & do it VERY SLOWLY, beleive me its not easy, just make sure the old seal is clean remove as much off as you can and use white spirt to remove the rest. Good luck

I'm on the final stretch now. Mainly the trims and then the inside...and I have made a start on that already.
Thanks for all the encouragement and kind words.

Thanks Wizard.

Coming soon: How to replace a caravan skylight after it gets blown off when returning from your very first holiday!

They were both latched down before I left the site, so the catch must have been weak or something. I had intended to change this one at some point anyway as there was a little leak through the handle that I had stopped with a blob of mastic.

Anyone know a good source for skylights?
