M & K---What year is your van?--cause fridges on newish vans require an adequate voltage for them to work. Many auto electricians will take the easiest route for the 12s wiring, like from any 12v supply in the boot for instance, (which will work for older type fridges). To run a big fridge you must take your supply direct from the battery through a 15 amp fuse using at least 2.5mm + wiring (I used a 4mm) to a smart relay positioned in the boot. Also the white and black wires coming from your socket must be earthed separately. The relay will be activated when you start your engine----(give it a little rev up then idle )---------Have a look at your battery and check out the wiring---look for another wire + fuse at the positive pole.---?? When you shut down your engine, the relay will de-activate.  Your fridge switch indicator should be at the battery symbol, and 12v supply off .-----if your van is fairly new then you will have a habitation relay fitted which will take care of the battery charging.---if your have older type panel with the van/car switch then put the switch in neutral, neither van or car.  Buy a small electrical multi-meter and read the instructions, as this little tool will tell you exactly what voltage is at your 12s socket and also what the charge is at the battery---about £8 on e-bay
