Hi

I've moved my Battery from one side of the caravan to the other and have had to extend the leads to just over 2m. In doing this I stuck to the same 2.5mm gauge wire that was there before.

The question is should I have gone for 4mm gauge as I remember something about the longer the length the larger the diameter wire you need with 12 volt.

Can anyone tell me if 2m is too long for the size I'm using. The van is an 88 abi jubilee and so there is not a huge 12v draw

Thank you

It would have been better to upgrade, however it all depends on what current you intend to draw.  If its for lights, they may a bit dimmer.  If you run a tv it might upset it.

Try it and if you are happy with the equipment you are using is satisfactory then no need to change.

cheers. If I use the tv (once or twice a year) I tend to use an extension lead from the car. so I probably won't notice any difference.

As long as its safe for charging then I'll stick with it.

Thanks again

Cable size/loading has changed - there are now two types of cable the newer one having a higher amperage than the older one size for size, although the insulation is different.

It's worth doing a check on line and seeing what you come up with try http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk

check out the wire types, sizes and maximum amperage

The reason for the larger cable is to minimise the voltage drop over the resistance of the wire. Over a distance of 2 metres 2.5mm sq. cable is fine. What is most important is that any joins you have made in the cable are sound as these can introduce much more resistance than the cable itself and can lead to overheating and fire if not secure.
