Where we keep our caravan I noticed last week that a lot of the vans had white powder round the steadies. I found out why this weekend - ants!! . Whats the best way to stop them getting in and exterminating them that have got in. When we got the van last year I put foam round all the holes that the pipes went through although there are lots of air vents that I left - so they must be getting in through these vents.(The storage where keep it has just been upgraded all the grass and mud have been replaced by cinders? and the ants have just appeared.)

I shouldn't think there is any way you can totally seal a caravan against tiny insects like ants and perhaps the only way is powder around the steadies and wheels, and anything else that touches the ground.

If they are coming into the caravan they are probably attracted by food particles, sugery stuff in particular, so a good clean out with a hoover and antibacterial surface cleaners should help. A squirt of insect spray in all the lower cupboards and floor area may help.

Ants usually travel in columns too and from their nest by the same route. If you have a serious problem inside (not just the odd one or two) you may be able to watch them and trace where they are gaining access.

I saw an advert for plastic feet that attach to the corner steadies to help spread the weight. The also had a "moat" in them that you could fill with water that made a barrier against the Ants...I think they were on e-bay.

Wilko's sell ant traps, called Ant stop. Cost about £1 for 2

My mum uses them in the garden and garage. I have just got some as they are coming in my house inbetween the cavity walls.

They apparently go in the traps and it kills them.

We keep getting ants in the house (we think it was build on a massive ant hill) and have tried all of the usual without much success - powder, sprays, traps etc. We managed to get hold of a couple of cans of "ant exterminator" spray from abroad and "touch wood" so far this year after one spray - no more ants.
