I have an old 1985ish ABI Award Globestar 4 berth caravan and, like me the axle is very worn out!!!!
To buy a new one and have it fitted would cost about as much as she is worth so, please if any one out there knows of, or is theirself breaking an ABI (apparently they are a bit wider than other makes!!) caravan and wants to sell me the axle, i would be more than grateful.
It is an ALKO axle and measures 62" from the outer side of the chassis to the same place on the other side.
I've tried almost everywhere but I am confident that one of the U.K Campsite buffs will be able to help me!!!
I'm sure that you've done your homework but what do you mean by 'worn out'? In my experience it's the axle bearings, bushes etc that wear out and these can be replaced quite cheaply.
I would have thought that the only time a complete axle needs replacing is if it gets damaged or suffers from excessive corrosion.
Erm, well it's a bit of a long story...yawn... I don't know anything about the underneath of a caravan. I bought it as "damaged axle" but when I took it into be looked at by two pro's they both said the axle was no good and needed to either be sent away to ALKO KOBLER or someone for repair or for me to buy a new one and that they would fit it, either way at least 400pounds in total. Failing that if I was lucky enough to find a secondhand one they would fit it for 100pounds.
So I don't really know, I am in their hands really.
I presume if they thought they could fix it that they would have offered.
All I know is that from behind both the wheels point outwards at the bottom!!!
Thanx Michael, I just gave them a call and they only do panels but did suggest I try caravaninglinks, which I am about to do. Think I have probably been through nearly all the breakers on the net!!!!
hi only a new axle would do as they are complex in design and as far as i know only al-ko can repair them, this is the shape of the rubbers in the axle.see
looks as if I am gonna have to use it as a static then!!!!!
any idea how much a 4 berth ABI Award Globestar is worth, don't know if it would be worth spending over 400 on it or not, we do love it and it does have hot water!!!!!
Surely someone out there has a deceased Globestar, that I could buy a donor axle from!! He, he!!
Perhaps the reason you are having difficulty in sourcing an axle is 'cos you're looking for a particular model of caravan, whereas I think you should be looking for the same model of chassis instead, which would be used on a variety of caravan bodies. Might widen your search more!
Hi, thanx John and Michael, well my caravan man told me that the axle on my caravan (being an ABI) was wider than most so thats why I always state thats what it is but I get your drift and will bear that in mind because there must be other makers that have them the same size.
I will fill in the caravan used parts form on the link you sent me michael, thanx to you both!
