Hi all, i am relatively new to caravaning and bought our first family van in July, an old mid 80's Lunar Kumara just to learn the ropes, we decided if we liked it we'd upgrade to something better next year.

The dilemma we have at the moment is with the Electolux fridge, it has never worked on 12 or 240v, the switches don't even light up. So we have been running the fridge on gas, but now it's getting difficult to light the fridge, it just pops and blows out.

I asked my local store about a new fridge which they priced up at £450! Hardly worth it in a van that only cost £750

Could anyone shed some light on what the cost of repair might be... i understand you could never know exactly but i was wondering if it was worth repairing or should we just save ourselves and chop the van in for something better?

Thanks for any advice

Hi Adele24 , Welcome to UKCS ,  I would ask your local caravan dealer how much it would cost for a fridge service , even if the mains side of the fridge is u/s they should be able to get it working well on gas . For the 12volt side of the fridge have a look at the 12s grey plug wires and check the pins are clean / tight see here http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/towbar_electrics.shtml

If it is too expensive to repair maybe you should look for a 2nd hand one. There are some small 240v fridges which you can pick up for about £25 (2nd hand). Of course it cannot run on gas or 12v but it depends what you want and how much you can afford.

If you want all three optios advertise for one in the local press, try a breaker, or ask around when you are on a site.

You might just get a straight replacement!

If it is trying to work on gas then the probable reason for not working on 240v is the element is U/S.

Service cost for a fridge should not be to drastic, getting it out and back in again is the longest job and an hour to service/repair. However be aware, if you brought your van to me I'd want to check the whole gas system to make sure all is safe to use. I would expect any competent dealer to do the same.
