How long would it take for a caravan to become unusable after the onset of damp.I'm curious would it be months or years
Many thanks

Also depends on what timber was used during manufacture. Dad (my damp/rotten wood expert) says there are a number of woods that would last wet for decades, others only months. Aparently the motor industry (including caravans) generally use Ash as it's relatively light, cheap(ish) & fairly flexible but not very rot resistant whereas something like oak would be more rot proof but too hard & heavy.
I was fascinated, didn't think different timbers would perform different jobs. Apparently wood isn't just wood!
When you strip them out a bit you realise that they are made of nowt, but then they have to be light....you can't win

iot might help if they treated the wood before construction instead of using low quality softwood untreated . all the wood I have replaced has been treated and the caravan weight does not go up one bit.
its not in the interest of caravan manufacturers to increase the lifespan of a caravan as all they want to do is sell as many as they can. god I wish their was a build it yourself kit.

I have to agree with you Al , i still find it laughable that the wood used is still untreated , there should be some form of regulation stating that all wood used in this type of construction was treated

Could not agree more.....that is why I used treated in my repair. What I cant get over is that they could even save weight using recycled plastic.........it is non bio-degradable so the 'van should last forever!!
