Sometimes when you look at the socket it can be confusing as to which way the wires go in the link above the socket is shown as though you are looking directly at the front ( you would have to lift the flap to see the pins ) . Remember that you need to find live wires for most of the connections , to do this remove the bulbs so you can check which wire is supplying the live .

I could be wrong, but I think the Focus has a CANbus system which means you need a ford (or right connections) "black box" to fit a socket. I know that new mondeo, smax,transit etc have it.

If its not canbussed and if you have lamp failure indicator on the dash then you need a bypass relay.

If what I am saying is jibberish then trot down to your local towbar fitter before you make mr ford several hundred pounds richer when smoke comes from the rear of your focus.
