Hi Brian, I have just sent the manual to your E-Mail address, page by page just in case it gets caught in a "spam net".

If you do not receive it, please let me know.

Regards, Norman.

To say two stroke generators are dangerous is a little over the top. If they were dangerous, they would not be sold.

No they are not dangerous. It is some of the people that use them who are dangerous. You know the sort that splash in the fuel without a funnel or spout, or the ones that fill it straight up without waiting for it to cool down. Or even those with older types that do not use a power breaker. Then there are those that take delivery of a hired one with no instructions. I could go on and on but it would bore people, the same as reading to the end of the manual.

You can tell I was once a health and safety officer.

Hi Brian, I bought my gennie after my first camping trip for thirty years to charge my digital camera and camcorder batteries, I used a car inverter which used too much petrol when running on tick over. THEN I bought a caravan for my return trip this year.

It is one of the most useful things I've ever bought. In the 'van I use it for charging and using the following; caravan leisure battery, digital camera batteries, camcorder batteries, mobile telephone, laptop computer and Satphone connection, and a T.V.

I must point out that the site I visit is not like any other, there are over 16,000 staying there for a period of ten days in July. I, and others use our gennies in the morning and in the evening, never heard of any complaints.

At home it has been useful during a power cut, powering fridge, freezer and lights. For an outdoor party it was sufficient to cope with lights and a beer pump.

As for "Earthing", this must be done for safety reasons. I use a twelve foot earth lead connected to the earth point on the gennie. At the other end  I have soldered the inner of the lead to a ten inch tent peg, similar to a spike. All electrical items must be earthed when in use.

I fire it up twice a week, just to make sure it is ready for any eventuallity.

Hope this info is of use to you.

Regards, Norman.

No offence should be taken on anything written in forums, after all if we had all been discussing this around the table in the pub, you would have had the benefit of facial expressions and seen that nobody is getting irate, we are all just putting our point of view, whether it is useful or not.

Now, who's round is it

Back to the topic, I work in the gardening trade, sometimes I have to buy a new strimmer/hedgecutter etc. I queried the mixture given for one brand that had exactly the same engine as another brand. One was 25 to 1 the other was 50 to 1.

The bloke behind the counter said that the model that had the weaker mix wore out before the other. I reckon it was just a way of selling more machines over the years, not that they both earned their keep. But it makes you think. Also the two stroke oil is bottled up for different machines ie chainsaw, two wheels, strimmer, but labelled accordingly and priced to suite the market. It all has the same properties. The only one that might be different is outboard motor oil.

A 10" tent peg is no good for an earth. If its at home then a 1m x 10mm copper earth spike MINIMUM

Because a generator has a floating earth a rcd is not necessary as there is not 240v between the supply and earth ... unless you earth the genny.

Consult an expert BEFORE earthing a portable generator
