The earlier, bench type Thetford cassette toilets had a transparent sight tube which doubled as a water level gauge and an emptying facility. I can only conclude that not continuing this theme on the later units is simply penny-pinching.
Ouch, Bob! If you bought the van from a dealer, that omission of the plug was very poor PDI.
Incidentally, when my van goes in for service I attach a sticker over the plug saying "Do not remove". I have reasoned that, the more frequently this plug is removed, the more likely it will one day come out by itself.
