Recently purchased a  1987 ABI Award Nightstar and our converter charger doesn't appear to be putting any power into the battery when plugged into the mains - has anyone ideas??? - or possibly any idea where we may be able to purchase a new one

First thing i would check is fuses , there should be one between the battery and charger , and there may also be on inside the charger case , disconnect mains first before checking .

If you look at the charger unit it should have a switch on the end, if it is switched on then the switch has a light in it thatlights up. It is possible that your unit is simply not switched on.

All fuses checked and OK - battery is only 2 years old so there must be a problem with the charger itself, is it possible there may be a loose connection on the charger? if we unscrew the front should we be able to check all is OK behind? its been on charge all night and there is still nothing at all coming from the battery, there is also no light on at all showing battery level either red or green even when connected to mains, shall I just look at buying a new charger unit?

Check that the charger is getting 240 mains , if it is check that it is producing 12volts + from the charger .
It does sound like you may have the 12 volt system turned off on a switch panel etc because the battery is not reading on the battery meter .

Thanks, a friend of ours has had a look, it looks as though the fuse holder maybe  faulty on the on/off switch for the charger - all other things seem to work fine when plugged in to car - hopefully will sort it now.

I have a similar problem was charging fine last week now nothing, I have checked the output from the charger unit which has 3 wires 1each red/black/white on the red and black no current but on white and black 14.5volt but as this appears to be a very light cable as far as I can see it is from a secondary winding on the transformer so it seems the main output is kaput!!

I see new units start at £80 unless anyone knows a good S/H supplier.

We purchased a Zig CF9 £105.95 (as shown above), a knowledgeable friend of ours fitted it foc back in February and we have had no problems since, everything works brilliant now so was worth the cost of a new one.  You can't be sure the same thing won't happen to a second hand one.

Cheers
