Hi folks

I'm getting the run around regarding having a towbar fitted to my new Sorento Titan.

I want a Witter fixed towbar and have my Straightliner stabliser and Witter cycle rack brackets bolted onto the towbar flange. I have spoken to a number of local Kia dealers and got conflicting advice regarding problems with a fixed towbar being detected by the reversing sensors. I finally went to Kia Uk. They advised that there well might be a problem but they could advise a Kia dealer (but only Kia dealers) on how to make "adjustments" to reversing sensors.

This means that to be on the safe side I have to go to a Kia dealer for the towbar fitting rather than an independent towbar fitter. The Kia dealers seem to vary in understanding of what is involved. I want a 13 pin euro socket and to be sure that there is good direct battery connection for caravan fridge and battery charging and, also, to power the Alko ATC system which I am planning to have fitted to the caravan. Does the Kia supplied wiring kits provide the battery connection I need?

The prices from towbar fitters range from £250-£350. The Kia dealers price range from £403-£850. One Kia dealer increased his price by £106 when I mentioned the 13 pin socket and fitting the other brackets!! I am obviously tempted by the independent towbar fitters who as well as being cheaper are more local and can do the job at convenient times. The Kia dealers say that it is too big a job to do on a Saturday morning so I would need to loose a day's work taking the car in. However I am concerned that if I go for an independent I may well end up having to go and pay a Kia dealer to sort out problems with reversing sensor.

Comments please.
Tim

The minimum difference of price between independent and Kia appears about £150 up to about £500. Ring a kia dealer and establish a price for them to "adjust" your reverse sensors - you will probably have to inform them that they need to contact Kia direct for the info.  from that see if independent is still  cost effective.

I personally would always use an established independent - Its their main job , good ones give a full guarantee, so they should know how to fit to your requirements. You may find that main dealers also use these independents when towbars etc are required. An independent fitter may also have a solution for your reverse sensors. My guess is "adjust" means fit a cut off sensor for when needed
