How Often do they need replacing?
I believe I have read that the friction pads should last around 30,000 Km, which is about 18,000 miles.
I don't know if there is a way to measure the frictional resistance to determine need for replacement. I have considered making up a bar with a ball welded at its end, and measuring the resistance by clamping the Winterhoff to it, and using a pull gauge at the free end. You could get a reading for new pads, but I don't know from where you could get a specified minimum reading to tell you when to renew. So I suppose you have to base it on "feel", in respect of how it seems to perform during actual towing.
