for my 1987 Elddis Mistral, the old one is cracked, has a large section missing, and the inner layer has cracked and fallen off. It is a total goner and needs replacing as a complete unit.  Does anyone know of a breaker or the like who might have one? Otherwise I'll have to consider a DIY fix, fitting two sheets of Perspex or similar as a permanently shut sealed unit. Any ideas welcome!

Maybe this is a stupid reply but I don't think so. Then again I'm sure someone will put me right

You have caravan insurance yes ? Doesn't it work the same as car insurance I.E. pay £50 excess and a company comes out and repairs your windscreen. ?

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately we do not have any insurance on the 'van. It cost me under 2 grand in 2001- it came from a dealer who'd taken it as a trade-in, they showed me where they had found damp, and passed it on to me with no warranty at virtually cost (I fixed the damp myself) so we didn't think it worth enough to pay premiums on! It's been a great 'van though and has given us some nice holidays. I think she's still got a few years in her if I can sort this latest little issue!

Hope you can. and I hope you never have an accident. Isn't insurance compulsory.Or is that another naive statement

The only insuance that is compulsory is cover towards third parties, and that comes with the towcar.

There is no obligation to insure against your own losses.   My current van was bought as a real cheapy, to allow us to try vanning as a family.   The insurance premiums for the time we have owned it would have paid for a replacement, so it was simply not worth insuring.

The replacement will be worth 10 times as much, and therefore is worth insuring.

OkeyDokey

You live and learn.

We insured ours but it did cost us £6000. So I suppose that was the right thing to do

Lead Balloon - you are in Cambridge I see. There is a caravan breakers West of Peterborough if you care to travel. I can thoroughly recommend them. They are predominantly a car scrap yard, but the owner's mother does caravans at the front of the site. She has a load of vans for 'self stripping' to get the part you need, and also a shed load of bits already taken off. Worth a call.

Car Spares, Upper benefield, Near Oundle, Peterborough PE8 5AS.
Tel. 01832 205253

If no luck there, you could try a place in Hull called Magnum Mobiles, who have a website I blieve. Just do a search for the name.
