Hi all...as you can see from the title, we have a poorly shower tray in our caravans wet room.  Its cracked around the plug hole. We can't afford to replace it, but does anyone know if we can mend the cracks with something?  We wondered if a sealant would do...the type you put around your bath at home.

The plughole (according to the plumber who put our new bath in) is the weakest point in a bath or shower tray.  So we thought we could mend it and then put a board or something over it to stop us stepping on it when we use the loo.

Has anyone any ideas???

Thanks everyone for reading my post.

Rach

If you can lift out the shower tray (I did on a campervan I had) you could fix it with Sikaflex. However, also get the primer which you paint on first and let dry before applying the Sikaflex Sealant.

Once primer is applied and dried, Sikaflex will stick to just about anything, but remain slightly flexiable to allow for movement.

Hi all...as you can see from the title, we have a poorly shower tray in our caravans wet room.  Its cracked around the plug hole.

just had the same problem,as you look at the plug hole a half moon crack about a quarter of one inch away from the chrome drain fitting itself, this ran for about two inch round the hole.we do not use the shower but could not leave it like that.my answer was to find a fitting larger than the one fitted,or a larger ring on top.the one i found was a sink strainer that fitted into the one we had, used to catch hair and food particals.made a larger hole in the centre for the screw.removed the screw from the old fitting.added loads of sealer on the underside and screwed down the new fitting over the top.removed excess filler.job done.stupid design is the reason for this happening.on the underside of the floor there is a four inch diameter hole, for this reason there is no support to the drain.AND they put them where everyone stands.

meant to say this way you cover up the crack with a new fitting and sealer.

Hi...the cracks are in the depression that houses the crome plug-hole fitting. All along one side. We do use the shower alot. I'm not sure if we can lift it out, I think it forms part of the toilet base, but will look when we go to the van (its in storage).

I'm worried that water could escape from these cracks and begin to form damp under the shower. Is that possible???

If we make the hole bigger and get a bigger fitting, would it fit the pipe that sits under the tray??

As you can tell.....we are not experienced in caravan DIY.

Thanks for all you replies.

no.

yes

I'm not sure if we can lift it out, I think it forms part of the toilet base, but will look when we go to the van (its in storage).

if its a standard fit, there should be a screw in the centre of the old fitting.this screws into a gray fitting on the underside.if you take care when removing the screw the gray bit will stay in place, held by the sealer.as long as you do not push on the screw when undoing it.

i would go down the strainer over the top route.this is about three inch across and along with new sealer covers the crack up.may be slightly proud and could hold a tiny bit of water in the bottom of the shower.

will take a photo and try to get it on here for you...........

Thanks.  Will try to get over to van over the weekend and have a proper look.

Hope we can fix it.....I dread to think what it would cost to have it mended.

You are all stars!!

Thanks for the pics and the advice.

We are now confident that we should be able to fix it.  Without your advice we would probably have sat and lokked at if for a couple of hours (I would have sobbed over it) and then taken it to a caravan workshop that we could'nt afford and had to use our Cornwall money to pay for it.

so...thanks!!  We are doing it in the next week.  And while hubby is in a DIY mood...might be able to get him to chuck a couple of shelves up too. LOL

Hi,
I realise this is an old post but please can you help?
I have the same problem with my Ranger 550/6 shower tray (2004), please could you advise the size of the grate you fitted, or if possible where I can purchase one, I am hoping to carry out this repair the next time I see my van, its stored in Cornwall 300 miles away and I lost the picture/drawing I made last time I was there.
