Hi All,

No that we have got our fan completley damp free and fixed (thanks to you lot :) we have decided to replace the existing carpet next week.

I would appreciate some pointers as to what type of carpet e.g. what backing should it have.  Do you use underlay? how do you fix it down?

any particular make you would reccomend?

Many Thanks

Joe

hi we did this a while ago,go to a carpet wearhouse ask for a roll end of your choice 16 foot long.cost from £10 to £50 depends on quality required.cut out the old one with a very sharp knife, lay it on top of the new one outside and cut round half inch larger all the way round.you can then put it back in and cut to exact location.i use small quarter inch brass screws and cups to hold it down about 18 inch apart each side. no backing required,if you did use it the doors may not open because of the thickness. they have fitters too and the cost would be small for a small area.

Thanks for the info so far.

I will be using carpet as we find it warmer and softer for the very young children we have.

I am in need of more info on fixing it please. I think that the carpets are normally glued down?

if so what glue would you use and which backing is then needed when getting a carpet? foam or whatever the other is?

If not glued would strong staples work?

Thanks

Joe

If I were carpeting my van I would use a weave called 'Tumbletwist'.  If you put underlay with the carpet, you will find the carpet will  outlast the van.

The quality lies in the name.  Tumbletwist will not flatten nearly as much as ordinary carpet, cleans better and has an overall appearance that far exceeds ordinary carpet.

I have fitted many, many carpets in my time (professional carpet fitter) and would recommend Tumbletwist every time.

I would also use tackless fittings to fit the carpet, for a superior finish.

Hope this helps.

Thanks fogey,

just what I needed. What are "tackless fittings" I have not heard of these before?

Hi Joe,

When I did mine I used good quality underlay, the weight keeps it down but I put some staples to hold it, when the carpet went over it again just used staples (this is how the original was held) around the edge.

As regards make, I think it more important that it's good quality (quieter underfoot)and if you can see if it has any thermal properties.

Here's a few pictures of mine, makes a big difference.

Happy carpet fitting,

-------------
Lawrence

Many Thanks everyone!

Got some carpet today, marked off around old one and then fitted it using a powerful hand staple gun. Looks great and the van now smells fresh and not that horrible stale carpet smell.

Thanks all...

Speak soon...

Pleasure Joe,

I found I eradicated most of that "funny" smell replacing the carpet, but there was a little something left, took me ages to work out what it was, the walls! Just wiped them over with some surface cleaner, even better now,

Cheers,

I'll give them a sniff and see

I'm sure the previous owners had a dog which must have slept by the door as that is where the old carpet smelt the worst!

The seats dont smell so perhaps it wasnt allowed up on the seats?

Regards

Joe
