We are looking at going to a caravan club rally which is on a playing field that only has water and waste disposal. We have only been on sites with electric hook ups. My question is, how long will we be able to run the caravan on the battery? We have a 85 amp leisure battery. We would only be using the general lights and TV on an evening. We use gas for the water heater, cooking and heating. We also have the dual electrics on the hitch. Can this be used to charge the battery while on the site and if so, how long would it take to charge the battery fully?
Hi marbeck- we go on these types on field sites all of the time. Only use your battery when needed- we use an old well rinsed out milk bottle for the water for the kettle, TV only minimum on a night time, lights- we only put the one on over the sink, it uses less than the others. We after many years still enjoy these types of weekend aways as they are much freindlier than when on a site with everything. If the weather is nice- BBQ, sit outside or in your awning and relax. I think out of the 15yrs we have been campers/caravanners we have only been on electric 5-6 times. What we have done this last 2yrs is we have a 110 amp battery on the van which we charge up before we go away everytime, plus an 85 amp battery carried in the car for the TV so that if the weather turns bad we can watch TV till our hearts content- we have a low usage tv, Have a good trip, enjoy. Gary
We use CL's all the time and with care your battery should last at least a week. Use gas for water, fridge, cooking and heat. Remember that your hot water system will require battery to ignite the flame - we leave ours alight all the time.
You will only be able to use your 12v system for lights and power - thats the funny little plug not a standard 3 pin. We never use a TV when on 12v and if nice spend most of the time with lanterns / candles outside. If your battery starts to get too low then hitch up to the car and recharge it.
Above all, dont drain your battery completely as this will ruin it.
I have a little 650 genny and use that to to up if no EHU available but only use in the day when there is plenty of activity 10 am till 6pm and only a couple of hours max, some campers have ask me where I got it from as its so quite, but always check with fellow campers to ask if it annoys them I will switch it off,but have never had any complaints
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
